About The Position

The CNC Lathe Setup Technician is responsible for setting up, programming adjustments, and preparing Mazak CNC lathes for production machining. This role ensures machines are properly tooled, programmed, and verified so production runs efficiently while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Requirements

  • 4 Technical degree in Machining, Manufacturing Technology, CNC Programming, or
  • 3–5 years experience with CNC lathe setup (Mazak preferred).
  • Experience with Mazatrol control systems (Smooth, Matrix, or older Mazatrol controls).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and GD&T.
  • Strong knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, speeds, and feeds.
  • Experience with live tooling or Y-axis Mazak lathes.
  • Knowledge of bar feeders and part catchers.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring instruments.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machining and dimensional issues.
  • Basic understanding of G-code and CNC programming adjustments.
  • Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to do complex jobs to standard with minimal supervision
  • Experience with Epicor or similar ERP systems for job tracking.
  • Must be able to demonstrate machine control knowledge during interview

Responsibilities

  • Set up and run Mazak CNC lathes for new and repeat production jobs.
  • Install and align tooling, tool holders, inserts, and fixtures according to setup sheets and job instructions.
  • Load, edit, and verify Mazatrol or G-code programs.
  • Set tool offsets, work offsets, and make adjustments to ensure parts meet specifications.
  • Perform first-piece and in-process inspections using measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Make program or offset adjustments to maintain tight tolerances and quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot machining issues including tooling wear, dimensional issues, and machine alarms.
  • Work with engineering or programming staff to optimize machining processes.
  • Ensure machines are properly stocked with tooling, coolant, and materials.
  • Train or assist CNC operators with job-specific requirements.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas following shop safety policies.
  • Document setup information and production notes for future runs.
