About The Position

Under general supervision, performs general manual labor activities within a City department. Essential duties and responsibilities may include performing sign installation and maintenance, painting loading, handicap and no parking zones, painting cross walks, inspecting and maintaining lift stations, installing or repairing cleanouts, cutting and laying underground pipe, repairing pipe, operating light motorized vehicles and equipment, repairing water leaks and water main or sewer system breaks, performing water pressure checks, performing water and sewer taps, inspecting water meters, installing, removing and replacing fire hydrants, performing flow tests, repairing man holes, repairing cave-ins, performing utility locates, performing water and sewer service connects to customer locations, performing street repair and asphalt overlay activities, repairing pot holes and sidewalks, participating in concrete projects, performing traffic control, performing recycling operations, performing general building and grounds cleaning and maintenance, participating in special event setup activities. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of experience in public works maintenance and repair operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • May require possession of a Commercial Driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Street maintenance and repair operations.
  • Knowledge of Construction practices and methods.
  • Knowledge of Concrete installation and repair methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Painting operations.
  • Knowledge of Traffic control methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Water and sewer systems.
  • Knowledge of Recycling operations.
  • Knowledge of Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Skill in handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment.
  • Skill in providing efficient customer service.
  • Skill in understanding and applying City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in operating various light motorized equipment and vehicles.
  • Skill in using various hand and power tools.
  • Skill in utility locates.
  • Skill in map reading.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City.
  • Skill in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs sign installation and maintenance.
