About The Position

The purpose of this job is to perform technical functions associated with testing and analyzing urine samples that are collected from Probationers, Accountability Court Participants, Pre-Trial Participants, Individuals on Bond Conditions and any other individuals as ordered by the Courts to assure compliance with federal, state, and local standards. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, analyzes samples and performs various testing, evaluates the results of testing and recording data, prepares reports, maintains equipment, and performs additional tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Vocational/Technical school training in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, Criminal Justice or related discipline, with one year of sample collections, or related experience required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Athens Clarke County Probation Drug Lab Department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Laboratory Technician II.
  • Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal/state laws, Unified Government ordinances, departmental policies and procedures, and departmental methods as required in the performance of duties.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory principles, techniques, terminology, equipment, and materials.
  • Knowledge of basic chemistry, biology, and drug/alcohol testing process.
  • Ability to compile, organize, prepare, and maintain an assortment of records, reports, and information in an effective manner and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members.
  • Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non-routine situations.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply the regulations and procedures of the department.
  • Ability to communicate effectively by oral and written communications.
  • Ability to perform standard mathematical calculations such as ratios, unit conversions, percentages, and other laboratory-related mathematics.
  • Ability to operate various laboratory equipment and office equipment including an Analyzer, computer, calculator, and telephone.
  • Ability to utilize various software programs relevant to the position.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including office equipment such as computers, telephones, copiers, fax machines, calculators, etc.

  • Requires the ability to prepare purchase orders, payroll and various reports using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Requires the ability to speak to people with poise, voice control, and confidence.
  • Requires the ability to learn and understand basic principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgments in the absence of management.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently.
  • Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; and multiply and divide.
  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with office equipment.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using office equipment.
  • Requires the ability to use the keyboard, lift, bend, push, and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, fax machines, calculators, etc.
  • Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • May require the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone, two-way radio.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes samples taken from Probationers, Accountability Court Participants, Pre-Trial Participants and Individuals on Bond Conditions, and any other individuals as ordered by the Courts and document results of analyses.
  • Analyzes samples for various parameters as required by Accountability Courts, Superior Court, State Court, Magistrate Court, Municipal Court, Probate Court and Juvenile Court, department rules and regulations, and standard laboratory procedures.
  • Collects, analyzes, and documents urine sample analysis.
  • Maintain laboratory sample stations.
  • Records analysis data; prepares reports of the results of sample analyses.
  • Operates and maintains laboratory equipment; prepares requisitions for new/replacement laboratory equipment.
  • Receives and/or prepares correspondence, forms, reports, and other documentation; reviews, processes, and/or forwards documents as appropriate; maintains files and logs; performs other clerical duties.
  • Answers questions and responds to complaints related to the laboratory processes.
  • Answers the telephone; provides information; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Responds to routine requests for information from officials, employees, and members of the staff, the public, or other individuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
