Laboratory Support Technician/Phlebotomist

About The Position

This entry-level position performs specimen procurement and/or processing of laboratory specimens and provides laboratory support functions. It is part of an established career ladder; the appropriate title and pay are assigned based on education and experience. The role includes computer data entry, laboratory processes such as sterile technique and aliquoting, and/or phlebotomy. The position requires working efficiently to meet departmental turnaround time standards, processing specimens for testing, and following applicable policies, standards, and procedures. The employee must safeguard patients’ Protected Health Information (PHI) in accordance with annual training, the UH Code of Conduct, and UH policies and procedures. Specific duties and responsibilities may be provided by the department during orientation.

Requirements

High school equivalent or GED.
Less than one year of entry-level work experience.
Working knowledge of preanalytic laboratory and safety policies and procedures.
Ability to initiate and maintain positive relationships with patients, customers, and co-workers.
Ability to take responsibility for self-development and display initiative in performing job duties.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask.
Competency in venipuncture for patients of all ages.

Nice To Haves

Formal training from an accredited phlebotomy school or medical assistant program.
Phlebotomy Certification (CPT), preferred upon hire.

Responsibilities

Organize and perform tasks efficiently to meet departmental turnaround time standards.
