About The Position

Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Healthcare Center is hiring a full-time certified Laboratory Phlebotomist in Newberry, Michigan. The role obtains blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis and maintains clerical aspects of reference-laboratory testing. The phlebotomist reports directly to the Laboratory Director and interacts with coworkers, hospital personnel, medical staff, patients and residents, and visitors. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Complete a Basic Medical Terminology class within the first year.
Obtain and maintain phlebotomist certification through a national certification program.
Obtain and maintain BLS certification.
Customer-service oriented.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Strong verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

Obtain blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis.
Maintain the clerical aspects of reference-laboratory testing.
Ensure correct patient identification and specimen labeling.
Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture skillfully and discreetly for patients including geriatric, pediatric, acutely ill, and injured patients.
Sort and process patient specimens accurately.
Maintain a continual flow of specimens to technical areas and the reference laboratory.
Start glucose tolerance procedures.
Educate patients on the correct way to collect samples at home and in the hospital for laboratory analysis.
Ensure specimen quantities are sufficient for in-house and reference-laboratory analysis.
