Laboratory Phlebotomist - Certified
About The Position
Helen Newberry Joy Hospital & Healthcare Center is seeking a certified Laboratory Phlebotomist to obtain blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis and maintain the clerical aspects of reference laboratory testing. The position has daily contact with coworkers, hospital personnel, medical staff, patients and residents, and visitors. It reports directly to the Laboratory Director. The role includes correctly identifying patients and labeling samples; skillfully and discreetly performing venipuncture and capillary puncture for patients including geriatric, pediatric, acutely ill, and injured patients; sorting and processing specimens; maintaining specimen flow to technical areas and the reference laboratory; starting glucose tolerance procedures; educating patients on collecting samples at home and in the hospital; and ensuring specimens are sufficient for in-house and reference laboratory analysis.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Complete a Basic Medical Terminology class within the first year.
- Obtain and maintain phlebotomist certification through a national certification program.
- Obtain and maintain BLS certification.
- Customer-service oriented.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
Responsibilities
- Obtain blood and other specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Maintain clerical aspects of reference laboratory testing.
- Correctly identify patients and label samples.
- Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture skillfully and discreetly for patients, including geriatric, pediatric, acutely ill, and injured patients.
- Sort and process patient specimens accurately.
- Ensure a continual flow of specimens to technical areas and the reference laboratory.
- Start glucose tolerance procedures.
- Educate patients on the correct methods for collecting samples at home and in the hospital for laboratory analysis.
- Ensure specimens are sufficient in quantity for in-house and reference laboratory analysis.
