About The Position
Under the supervision of the divisional Laboratory Director or Manager, the Laboratory Supervisor provides clinical and technical supervision of medical laboratory technologists and technicians to meet daily testing demands and support department operations. The Supervisor coordinates and oversees staff activities in core and/or specialty laboratory areas and maintains standards in accordance with department, hospital, and regulatory requirements. The role serves as a communication link between medical staff, nursing, and the laboratory, collaborating on special or difficult patient cases. The Supervisor may perform bench testing when necessary and must be able to fulfill all duties of an MT/MLT. The position oversees laboratory operations and technical staff, including performance appraisal, employee training, work assignment, and resolution of workplace concerns in accordance with organizational policies. In partnership with the Manager or Director, the Supervisor supports employee hiring, termination, rewards, and discipline as needed. The role also oversees testing quality, laboratory procedures and equipment, staffing and supply needs, budget-conscious operations, regulatory compliance, staff education, and quality control and performance improvement programs.
Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
- Seven years of related experience in a medical laboratory setting.
- Ability to fulfill all duties of an MT/MLT.
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a related field.
- One year of prior supervisory experience.
- CP-BC (Clinical Pathologist-Board Certified) certification from the American Board of Pathology.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily laboratory operations and supervise technical staff, including performance appraisals and regular and annual performance feedback.
- Train employees; plan, assign, and direct work; address complaints and resolve problems in accordance with organizational policies; and work with the Manager or Director on hiring, termination, rewards, and discipline as needed.
- Supervise bench testing to ensure the accuracy and reliability of results, and analyze testing information to assess process efficiency.
- Oversee personnel-related administration, including employee records and timesheets, and anticipate laboratory supply and staffing needs; prepare work schedules as applicable.
- Develop and maintain laboratory guidelines and procedure manuals for effective instrument and equipment use and testing quality control.
- Evaluate new reagents and equipment according to established standards and promote compliance with applicable regulatory agencies.
- Oversee daily operations to control costs and remain consistent with budgetary guidelines; assist the Manager or Director with annual budget preparation as needed.
- Consult with laboratory staff, physicians, and other customers on technical studies and provide technical troubleshooting support.
- Instruct departmental personnel and laboratory users on technical procedures and provide educational experiences for staff.
- Participate in the development, continuation, and ongoing monitoring of quality control and performance improvement programs.
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other practitioners on special or difficult patient cases.
- Perform bench testing and other MT/MLT duties when necessary.
