About The Position

Under guidance, manages the administrative and technical components of the Renal/Electron Microscopy (EM) Pathology Division and supervises various activities related to the planning, quality assurance, performance and supervision of the clinical laboratory.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in clinical laboratory technology (or a related title) OR a Bachelor's or higher degree from a program with a major in biology, chemistry, or the physical sciences AND an advanced certificate from a college or university credit-bearing program in clinical laboratory technology registered as licensure qualifying at the time of graduation or the substantial equivalent of such program.
  • Approximately 5 years of electron microscopy and/or histological experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Knowledge and competency of laboratory administration, and the operation of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and the collection and processing of laboratory specimens.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License or Restricted Clinical Laboratory License or NYS Histotechnology License

Responsibilities

  • Oversees front-end activities, including specimen accessioning, coordination of consultation practice, slide management and phone communications.
  • Trains staff on utilization of, and special reports generation from, CoPath.
  • Serves as main point of contact.
  • Handles client service issues and serves as liaison with institutional accounts.
  • Ensures specimen mailing guidelines are met and ensures clients maintain adequate supply of jars, requisitions and mailers.
  • Monitors financial issues and outstanding A/R.
  • Supervises, recruits and on-boards both technical and administrative staff.
  • Ensures all required training is completed and documented.
  • Triages specimens and performs gross digital dictation of renal/non-renal biopsies for Light Immunofluorescence and Electron Microscopy.
  • Utilizes tissue processors, microtomes and other equipment for tissue processing/specimen sectioning/slide labeling.
  • Ensures that EM facilities and equipment are in optimal and proper working condition.
  • Coordinates preventative maintenance and repairs as needed.
  • May advise on upgrades for performance enhancements.
  • Responsible for daily calibration and alignment of electron microscope when utilized.
  • Maintains and ensures Electron Microscopy samples are properly stored, maintained and preserved for future use.
  • Ensures ABT tracking is in place for all specimens.
  • Oversees the filing of microscopy slides, tissue blocks (paraffin / resin), images and reports.
  • Maintains database for data retrieval for research projects, conferences and special studies.
  • Carries out digital photography of specimens.
  • Transfers data to appropriate servers and media.
  • Manages servers and ensures HIPAA compliance.
  • Ensures data is maintained in an organized retrievable database.
  • Ensures staff remain compliant with training and certifications necessary for a diagnostic chemical laboratory within NYS and NYC.
  • Participates in NYS and CAP on-site surveys.
  • Responds to deficiencies, if applicable.
  • Oversees lab safety and ensures compliance with all local, state and federal regulations.
  • Documents non-compliance and resolutions.
  • Ensures maintenance of lab standards in accordance with the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and Joint Commission.
  • Develops, maintains and/or disseminates departmental/functional-specific policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for maintaining a departmental SOP manual in accordance with NYP Surgical Pathology guidelines.
  • Generates custom reports for analysis, statistics and budgets.
  • Responsible for all Quality Assurance/Quality Control measures in the laboratory.
  • Creates and presents quarterly utilization reports.
  • Responsible for procurement activities.
  • Prepares and maintains solutions, supplies, and ancillary material necessary for continued operation of the lab.
  • Responsible for service contracts and maintaining adequate par levels.
  • Maintains chemical inventories.
