Requirements

  • High School Graduate
  • 0 to 6 months experience in laboratory
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent computer/data entry skills
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Screening and accessioning specimens into LIS.
  • Reconciling specimen information as samples are submitted for examination/testing.
  • Managing LIS work queues, quality control/audits, and coordinating specimen transport.
  • Processing all samples according to NYU policy/procedure.
  • Accepting specimens from delivery person, window, or pneumatic tube system, verifying logs/manifests, and signing off on received specimens.
  • Ensuring specimens are accompanied by LIS barcode label or demographic label and acceptable requisition.
  • Confirming specimen appropriateness for the requested test and verifying label completeness with required information.
  • Verifying that specimen label information matches the requisition and that requisition information is complete and accurate.
  • Notifying appropriate personnel of unacceptable samples (e.g., mislabeled, unlabeled, discrepant information) and documenting according to department procedures.
  • Resolving problems with specimen receipt and appropriateness of test requisitions/samples.
  • Timely processing of all samples, including accessioning, sorting, racking, and distributing specimens.
  • Observing special comments and instructions, and processing STATs and time-sensitive specimens promptly.
  • Notifying appropriate house staff and pathologists of frozen section cases.
  • Correctly labeling specimens with LIS labels and delivering them to the appropriate laboratory or instrument.
  • Registering patients and placing orders based on manual requisitions or as corrective action for improperly placed orders.
  • Answering telephones, providing customer service to Laboratory and Medical staff, and directing calls professionally.
  • Responding promptly to laboratory and medical staff inquiries and providing accurate information.
  • Faxing results to physician offices or other institutions as per policy.
  • Responding promptly to requests from providers (e.g., STATs and Add On requests).
  • Communicating critical values to providers as per policy in the absence of customer service personnel.
  • Processing samples for automated instrumentation, entering required pre-analytic information, and centrifuging samples.
  • Placing samples on automated test platforms as per protocol, which may include removing caps from tubes.
  • Arranging courier pickups as needed.
  • Cleaning all laboratory work surfaces and assigned areas, maintaining an organized workspace, and restocking supplies.
  • Notifying supervisor of any supply shortages.
  • Following all safety requirements for PPE and the utilization of engineering controls.
  • Participating in the training of new lab accessioning staff.
  • Processing and preparing patient specimens for referral to outside laboratories, ensuring accurate labeling, documentation, packaging, and shipping.
  • Verifying test orders, maintaining specimen integrity and turnaround expectations, tracking send-out status and results, and communicating with staff, couriers, and reference labs to resolve discrepancies.
