Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • 0 to 6 months experience in laboratory.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent computer/data entry skills.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

  • Prior accessioning experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

Responsibilities

  • Screening and accessioning specimens into LIS.
  • Reconciling specimen information as samples are submitted for examination/testing.
  • Managing LIS work queues, quality control/audits, and coordinating specimen transport.
  • Processing all samples according to NYU policy/procedure.
  • Accepting specimens from delivery person, window, or pneumatic tube system, ensuring log/manifest matches actual specimens received.
  • Verifying specimen suitability for requested tests, ensuring labels and requisitions are complete and accurate.
  • Notifying appropriate personnel of unacceptable samples and documenting according to department procedures.
  • Resolving problems with specimen receipt and appropriateness of test requisitions/samples.
  • Timely processing, accessioning, sorting, racking, and distributing specimens.
  • Processing STAT and time-sensitive specimens promptly.
  • Notifying house staff and pathologists of frozen section cases.
  • Labeling specimens correctly and delivering them to the appropriate laboratory or instrument.
  • Registering patients and placing orders based on manual requisitions or as corrective action for provider errors.
  • Answering telephones, providing customer service to Laboratory and Medical staff, and directing calls professionally.
  • Responding promptly to laboratory and medical staff inquiries and requests.
  • Faxes results to physician offices or other institutions as per policy.
  • Communicating critical values to providers as per policy in the absence of customer service personnel.
  • Entering required pre-analytic information into the medical record at accessioning.
  • Centrifuging samples and placing them on automated test platforms as per protocol.
  • Arranging courier pickups as needed.
  • Cleaning laboratory work surfaces and assigned areas, maintaining an organized workspace, and restocking supplies.
  • Following all safety requirements for PPE and engineering controls.
  • Participating in the training of new lab accessioning staff.
  • Processing and preparing patient specimens for referral to outside laboratories, ensuring accurate labeling, documentation, packaging, and shipping.
  • Verifying test orders, maintaining specimen integrity and turnaround expectations, tracking send-out status and results, and communicating with staff, couriers, and reference labs to resolve discrepancies.
