About The Position

The Lab Support Technician I works under the supervision of the section Supervisor and Senior Tech, providing comprehensive support for patient care activities in the Core Lab. The position requires weekend work and participation in a weekend call rotation. The schedule may change because of staffing needs, with two weeks’ notice.

The role handles specimens from receipt through preparation and processing, supports order entry and related documentation in EPIC, responds to calls about laboratory services, and performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or formal education equivalent.
• Ability to follow oral instructions, read, and write.
• Computer and basic keyboarding skills.
• Telephone etiquette skills.
• Excellent customer service skills.

Nice To Haves

• One year of experience in a clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Receive specimens from all sources and verify that they are properly collected and labeled.
• Ensure each test is received in the correct tube type.
• Sort specimens and place them in the appropriate racks or buckets.
• Load racks onto the appropriate automation line for receipt and testing.
• Scan specimens into EPIC and relabel specimens as needed.
• Enter orders into EPIC through requisition entry for outside institutions.
• Process add-on tests and timed urine specimens.
• Answer phone calls concerning results, faxing reports, specimen collection, and test ordering.
• Reconcile packing lists.
• Process Reference, VA, ACH, and mail-in specimens.
• Scan requisitions received with laboratory specimens from institutional accounts into EPIC.
• Call critical results as needed.
• Complete Safety Intelligence reports and deliver them to the Core Lab Manager.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
