About The Position

This role assists with the safe, compliant, and profitable development of our Field Service Program. The Lab Pack Chemist ensures all safety requirements are met or exceeded and adheres to all company procedures, including lab pack safety and operations SOPs and other Field Service Operating Procedures. This position operates with minimal supervision and requires the use of expertise and experience to make decisions regarding the safe and compliant shipment, handling, and processing of lab packs. The chemist completes chemical inventories and segregates materials on paper according to their physical properties, chemical properties, and DOT and EPA regulations. They accurately communicate instructions regarding the hazards of material being managed to others who will be handling or receiving the waste materials. The role involves performing lab packing at customer sites in accordance with governmental health and safety guidelines and customer policies, and working with customers and technical staff to reconcile additional materials being added to projects. The chemist maintains all paperwork necessary to track and invoice projects and assists with the cleanliness and general upkeep of all work areas. They support the RIS Field Services Manager with performing Field Services at customer locations, segregating chemicals for lab packing, and serving as a backup to Customer Service in preparing manifests and Waste Product Surveys. The position plays a significant role in achieving AOP objectives and performs as a Customer Service Chemist for approving lab packs as necessary. Additionally, the role performs fingerprint testing in the field as necessary, operates light and heavy equipment, and engages in strenuous physical activity. The chemist works in various indoor and outdoor environments and may serve as a technician in the field. They wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed and use advanced PC and business computer applications daily. The role requires an understanding of OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 systems and may involve performing other job-related duties.

Requirements

BS/BA degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, Biology or related science or equivalent experience required.
Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office/Windows and computerized waste tracking systems).
Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time while performing inspections.
Must have the desire and ability to travel 30-40% of the time.
Must be technically competent and have a good understanding of physical properties and characteristics of common chemicals.
Must be physically able to wear personal protective equipment when needed.

Nice To Haves

2 years experience in environmental remediation or hazardous waste disposal preferred.
Experience with operating front-end loader, forklift or tow motor or a CDL is a plus.

Performs as a Customer Service Chemist for approving lab packs as necessary.
Performs fingerprint testing in the field as necessary.
Operates light and heavy equipment including, but not limited to: pumps, vacuum equipment, oil spill booms, generators, skid steers, etc.
Engages in strenuous physical activity including lifting, pulling and pushing heavy objects including 55-gallon drums.
Works in indoor and outdoor areas with potentially elevated noise levels, confined spaces or areas of low clearance.
May serve as a technician in the field, ensuring materials are properly vacuumed, sampled, manifested, segregated, packaged, shipped and to perform industrial services in a safe and compliant manner.
Wears personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed and in accordance with safety policies and procedures.
Daily use of advanced PC and business computer applications, telephone conferencing and e-mail.
Understands both RIS’ OHSAS 18001 Occupational Health & Safety and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, and assists with executing their objectives.
Performs other job-related duties assigned.
