About The Position

Quantum Sky is seeking a Kubernetes Engineer to support the US Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC), Operational Command and Control Acquisition Delta, known as Kobayashi Maru. The program continuously delivers software for space operations, including software for space defense, space domain awareness, and enabling data services. The engineer will design, secure, deploy, operate, and manage Kubernetes environments that support 14 software product teams and thousands of users across test, IL4 development, IL6 staging/production, and higher-classification staging/production environments. The role focuses on reliable, resilient containerized services, automation, lifecycle management, security, observability, networking, performance, and scalability. Work is performed within an Agile framework.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of professional experience as a Kubernetes Engineer designing and building distributed systems for mid-to-large enterprises, including 2 years of SRE experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, STEM, or IT from an accredited institution.
  • Current Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA), Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD), Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA), or equivalent certification.
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Resume-demonstrated experience delivering container orchestration solutions that leverage container technology.
  • Experience designing, building, and implementing cloud-native architectures with Kubernetes.
  • Experience maintaining, configuring, and monitoring containers using Infrastructure as Code principles in development, test, and production environments.
  • Experience designing containerized solutions for relational and non-relational databases, data auditing, caching, and performance.
  • Experience implementing observability solutions, identifying key metrics to monitor, and establishing monitoring foundations.
  • Experience troubleshooting and conducting root cause analysis for routine to moderately complex issues with accuracy and performance.
  • Experience deploying and managing microservices using container orchestration platforms.
  • Experience automating system tasks and infrastructure using a scripting language, configuration management tools, service registry and discovery tools, infrastructure orchestration tools, and automated imaging tools.
  • Experience using and optimizing monitoring and trending systems, log aggregation systems, and their agents.
  • Proficiency with one or more of the following: Argo CD, cert-manager, Ingress, Keycloak, MinIO, MongoDB, Pinniped, Prometheus, Grafana, VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid, Sealed Secrets, Tanzu Postgres and Operator, Vault, Velero/Restic, Harbor, Kustomize, Jira, Confluence, GitLab, or Helm.

Nice To Haves

  • Residence in Colorado Springs, Colorado, or El Segundo, California, is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Use Kubernetes to deliver, install, upgrade, patch, and maintain reliable, resilient solutions for deploying and hosting tools and services used to develop, test, secure, and ship software applications to production.
  • Work within an Agile framework, including daily stand-ups, feedback, sprint and iteration planning, retrospectives, product backlog and roadmap execution, performance metrics, and progress and blocker reporting.
  • Secure and configure Kubernetes-orchestrated containerized services and their underlying environment.
  • Tune Kubernetes performance and identify problems using service and traffic metrics, monitoring, and alerting dashboards.
  • Lead lifecycle management for containerized services used to develop Kobayashi Maru software.
  • Troubleshoot containerized services and publish root cause analyses and postmortems with the larger portfolio.
  • Establish Service Level Objectives and other Site Reliability Engineering metrics.
  • Manage north-south and east-west network traffic to maintain critical container-based services.
  • Ensure the Kubernetes environment is properly patched and configured, has sufficient resources, and can scale without being overprovisioned.
  • Apply automation and an everything-as-code approach to design, secure, deploy, and manage Kubernetes environments supporting software teams and users across multiple environments and classification levels.
