Kubernetes Engineer

World Wide Technology•St. Louis, MO

About The Position

The Kubernetes Engineer – OpenShift works at the center of WWT’s container platform strategy, combining partnership with application teams and hands-on platform engineering. The role serves as a liaison between infrastructure and application development teams, helping developers design and containerize workloads and onboard them to Kubernetes and OpenShift using approved standards, self-service patterns, and best practices. The engineer helps design, build, and maintain large-scale, highly available Red Hat OpenShift clusters and develops CI/CD and GitOps pipelines to move application code safely and efficiently from commit to production. The role also supports extending platform capabilities into Microsoft Azure and other cloud platforms. With guidance from senior engineers, the engineer participates in an on-call rotation and contributes to platform reliability, security, performance, and scalability.

Requirements

  • Typically 3–5 years of experience in Kubernetes/OpenShift engineering, container platform operations, or infrastructure automation.
  • Ability to partner across teams and act as a liaison, helping application development teams onboard to and adopt Kubernetes/OpenShift.
  • Hands-on experience maintaining production Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform clusters, including upgrades, scaling, and day-2 operations.
  • Strong familiarity with OpenShift architecture, including control plane and worker node lifecycle, Operators/OLM, and cluster upgrades.
  • Familiarity with Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) for multi-cluster policy, governance, and application lifecycle management.
  • Solid understanding of Kubernetes concepts including pods, deployments, services, ingress/routes, namespaces, RBAC, persistent storage, and networking such as OVN-Kubernetes/SDN or Calico.
  • Experience with Kubernetes networking and traffic management, including HAProxy, load balancer services, ingress controllers, and routes.
  • Experience with container security practices, including image scanning, Security Context Constraints, and secrets management.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tooling, incident response, change management, runbooks, rollback planning, and on-call support.
  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) certification, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Strong technical documentation, troubleshooting, and stakeholder communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure or other public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, OCI), including Azure Red Hat OpenShift (ARO) or AKS.
  • Hands-on experience with OpenShift GitOps (Argo CD), including management of Applications and ApplicationSets for automated Git-based deployments.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins, GitLab CI, Tekton, Argo CD, or similar tools integrated with container registries and Kubernetes deployments.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools such as Ansible, Helm, Kustomize, and Terraform, and with Git-based workflows.
  • Experience with advanced Argo CD patterns, such as the app-of-apps model and multi-cluster ApplicationSets for fleet-wide deployments.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes storage solutions such as OpenShift Data Foundation/Ceph, NetApp Trident, and CSI drivers.
  • Experience using AI tools for log analysis, anomaly detection, or operational automation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between infrastructure and application development teams, guiding onboarding, containerization patterns, and self-service deployments to Kubernetes and OpenShift.
  • Assist with designing, building, and maintaining OpenShift clusters, including control plane, worker nodes, networking, storage, and Operators, to support production availability, performance, and capacity.
  • Maintain OpenShift platform health through node lifecycle management, cluster upgrades, and Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM).
  • Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD and GitOps pipelines for automated application build, test, and deployment.
  • Manage Argo CD Applications and ApplicationSets for automated, Git-based workload deployment and lifecycle management across clusters.
  • Use Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) to manage policy, governance, and application lifecycle across multiple OpenShift clusters.
  • Partner with application teams to containerize applications and define resource requests and limits, autoscaling policies, namespaces, RBAC, and network policies.
  • Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code and automation using Ansible, Helm, Kustomize, and Terraform for standardized cluster provisioning, configuration, and upgrades.
  • Partner with the security team to implement platform controls, including image scanning, Security Context Constraints, admission policies such as OPA/Gatekeeper, and secrets management with Vault.
  • Configure and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting, including Prometheus and Grafana, to support platform health and incident response.
  • Extend platform capabilities into Microsoft Azure and other cloud platforms, including Azure Red Hat OpenShift and AKS, to support hybrid and multi-cloud container strategies.
  • Maintain reliability through capacity planning, backup and disaster recovery, change management, and tested rollback procedures; execute change tickets with validation and participate in an on-call rotation.
  • Produce technical documentation, runbooks, and onboarding guides, and communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
