About The Position

The Kitchen Helper Summer Student position is approved through the Canada Summer Jobs Program. This role involves basic food preparation, assisting the Nutrition Coordinator, and handling food according to safety and sanitary regulations. Responsibilities include food service, setting meal trays, cleaning after meals, receiving goods, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring a safe and sanitary work environment by properly operating and cleaning kitchen equipment and surfaces. The helper will also assist with events, monthly cooking classes, in-house catering, and support volunteers in kitchen operations. The individual is responsible for meeting and reinforcing health and safety standards and maintaining equipment in good working order, while promoting safety for all co-workers, volunteers, clients, residents, families, and visitors.

Requirements

  • Cook Diploma or Food Service Worker Certificate
  • Current Food Handlers Certificate
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Proof of qualifications must be provided at the time of application
  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the program
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or someone to whom refugee status has been granted/conferred
  • Have a valid social insurance number
  • Not be an international student, or someone in Canada on a work, youth or visitor permit/visa

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an institutional kitchen preferred
  • Currently enrolled in a Food and/or Nutrition Program would be considered an asset

  • Ensuring that all health and safety standards are met and continually reinforced
  • Ensuring all equipment is maintained in good, safe working order
  • Working in a safe manner and promoting the safety of all co-workers, volunteers, clients, residents, families, and visitors
