About The Position

South Riverdale Community Health Centre is a non-profit, multi-service organization that provides primary healthcare, social and community outreach services with an emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention primarily to people of East Toronto. Harmony Community Food Centre (CFC), a program of South Riverdale Community Health Centre, in partnership with Community Food Centres Canada, is a welcoming place where people to come together to grow, cook, share and advocate for good food. The Kitchen Assistant is primarily responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of the kitchen and dining spaces and maintains appropriate health and safety measures for Harmony Community Food Centre. This position works closely with the Kitchen Facilitator, and works predominantly on Community Food Centre programs at 2 Gower St. This position may also work with other staff to assist with the delivery of food programs and services, including but not limited to online and in person cooking programs, congregate/community meals, take-out meals, community food market. This position is expected to work onsite.

Requirements

  • College Diploma in a relevant discipline, or High School Diploma and relevant experience
  • Ability to work Monday to Friday afternoons and flexible with other hours or weekends as needed
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Physically able to perform housekeeping chores
  • Physical ability to lift a minimum of 25 lbs.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology and various software applications as applicable
  • Ability to work at all sites of SRCHC
  • Police clearance documentation will be required for employment
  • Proof of double COVID-19 vaccination status will be required for employment

Nice To Haves

  • Food Handler Certification is an asset

Responsibilities

  • Assist as needed with Community Food Centre programs, e.g. meal preparation, food distribution, Good Food Market, accepting deliveries, inventory and stock rotation
  • Cooperate with staff and volunteers to ensure program areas (kitchen, serving areas) are available for use and maintained to a high standard of safety and cleanliness
  • Ensure kitchen and equipment are kept clean following appropriate infection control and food handling procedures as per Toronto Public Health guidelines
  • Ensure kitchen equipment and items are organized and stored safely in designated areas and function effectively and safely
  • Inform manager of equipment malfunctions or safety hazards
  • Complete laundry
  • Wash, sterilize and put dishes, pots, pans away after Community Food Centre meal programs
  • Clean kitchen counters, sinks and floors
  • Empty food waste and garbage
  • Participate in infection control measures throughout the facility
  • All other duties as required
