About The Position

San Francisco is seeking passionate and dedicated professionals for multiple Juvenile Hall Counselor positions. This role is crucial for the San Francisco Juvenile Probation Department (JPD), which is committed to re-imagining Juvenile Justice, advancing racial equity, and ensuring long-term public safety through the development, enrichment, and accountability of young people. The JPD's mission is to serve youth, young adults, and families with care and compassion, using fiscally sound and culturally competent strategies that promote the best interests of the youth and provide opportunities for restoration. Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Must meet State mandated training requirements as defined by Standards for Training in Corrections (STC).
  • Must satisfy State criteria for peace officer status.
  • Ability to meet 40 hours of on-site training during the first week of the job.
  • Ability to complete 200+ hours of instruction in the first year, potentially requiring travel and/or consecutive work weeks of overnight accommodation.
  • Ability to complete 24 hours annually of STC training.
  • Ability to respond to emergency conditions, which may involve physically controlling and restraining hostile youth and young adults.
  • Vision and hearing must be sufficient to perform the duties of the position.
  • Ability to lift and/or move with assistance objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more.
  • Ability to organize and supervise group activities.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations.
  • Ability to enforce rules.
  • Ability to accurately observe and document behavior.
  • Ability to apply reasonable "use of force" in self-defense or restraint procedures.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and resolve potential problems.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and assess behavior of detained youth in an assigned living unit, responsible for daily care, directing and guiding youth through daily schedules, and maintaining consistent close and active supervision to prevent incidents and ensure safety.
  • Implement appropriate behavior-management strategies to reinforce positive youth development and consult with supervisors as needed.
  • Maintain routine and emergency headcounts of all detained youth, conduct required state-mandated security checks of rooms, and monitor visiting sessions.
  • Administer emergency first aid, respond to critical incidents requiring approved physical intervention techniques, and perform pat searches and room inspections to confiscate contraband.
  • Complete incident reports, behavior reports, individual case reports, and other departmental forms; maintain contemporaneous notes in unit logbook and update electronic databases and case management systems.
  • Conduct ongoing individual and group counseling sessions with trauma-informed techniques, listen to and respond to questions, concerns, complaints, and requests, and assist in problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with Deputy Probation Officers to track a youth’s behavioral progress and rehabilitation goals.
  • Direct leisure time activities and teach/encourage good sportsmanship.
  • Transport residents to and from various locations, and direct/control residents’ movement.
  • Facilitate the admittance and release process of detained youth.
  • Confer with departmental personnel and representatives of outside agencies.
