HII's Mission Technologies division•Alexandria, VA
•$70,116 - $90,000•Onsite

About The Position

HII is seeking an imaginative and adaptable Junior Mechanical Engineer who is on schedule to graduate in May 2027 to join fast-paced, interdisciplinary teams in Alexandria, Virginia. The role applies foundational mechanical engineering knowledge to design and rapidly prototype mission hardware for the defense and intelligence communities. Projects move from concept to deployment, producing customized mission-enabling products used worldwide. The engineer will contribute to the design, development, prototype fabrication, integration, and verification testing of specialty mechanical and electromechanical products. Work may include electromechanical devices, motion platforms, electronics packaging, and visible, near-infrared, thermal, acoustic, and radio-frequency signature management. Designs should account for subtractive and additive manufacturing, electrical integration, and practical design tradeoffs. The position works closely with senior engineers, technicians, managers, project teams, and external customers. HII provides access to secure rapid prototyping facilities that include an in-house machine shop, composite fabrication, finishing, electronics assembly, and testing capabilities. The position may involve work in office, industrial, shipboard, or laboratory environments.

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret-level security clearance.
  • Experience working on a project that used project management techniques and practices.
  • Experience using 3-D modeling software for complex assemblies, detailed design, and realistic rendering.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, prototyping and production processes, quality control, and techniques for effective fabrication and manufacture of electromechanical devices.
  • The posting describes a candidate on schedule to graduate in May 2027.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working directly with a customer to understand and interpret needs and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of current and novel technologies related to mechanical engineering design, fabrication, and testing.
  • Ability to study industrial processes to determine where and how the company’s products can be applied.
  • Active U.S. Secret-level security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, development, prototype fabrication, and verification testing of unique specialty products.
  • Perform detailed system and subsystem analysis, simulation, and design work as required.
  • Evaluate complicated mechanical system concepts and detailed designs to determine appropriate design tradeoffs.
  • Interface with project teams and external customers to support specialized product development.
  • Participate in assembly, system test planning, and generation of system test procedures.
  • Document processes, procedures, and testing in structured formats; recommend formats for review when none exist.
  • Learn and use the Quality Management System (QMS), including existing tools and templates.
  • Apply mechanical engineering theory and methods to develop solutions such as electromechanical devices, motion platforms, electronics packaging, and multispectral signature-management systems.
  • Apply basic Design for Manufacturing knowledge to optimize designs for subtractive and additive manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers, technicians, managers, and end-user clients, maintaining regular communication across small teams.
  • Apply basic knowledge of electrical applications so mechanical designs support seamless product integration.
