About The Position

The JUMP Assistant Director, Student Development will join the JUMP Director and the Associate Director for Community Engagement to develop and implement the JUMP Program's strategic framework. This role involves demonstrating cross-cultural nuance in developing and implementing programming and holistic advising for pre-health students, with a focus on First-Generation, Low-Income (FLI) students. The position will establish collaborations within and outside Johns Hopkins University to promote student success and the program's mission. Key collaborations include Life Design, the Office for Academic Support, the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, other Center for Student Success programs, the Writing Center, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and Offices of Academic Advising. The Johns Hopkins Underserved in the Medical Professions (JUMP) program is a learning community dedicated to supporting students pursuing health professional careers. JUMP aims to dismantle barriers for students and alumni applying to health professions. Through partnerships with academic institutions, medical professionals, and community partners, JUMP builds opportunities for aspiring healthcare leaders from diverse and underserved backgrounds to navigate pre-med/pre-health pathways. JUMP members engage in programming and activities that enhance their pre-med/pre-health experience, including workshops, panels, events, clinical and research opportunities, leadership positions, a Well-ness Program, and networking. The JUMP program focuses on exploring, informing, and supporting undergraduate pathways to medicine and health professions. Working with the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, JUMP builds knowledge and skills for navigating these pathways. JUMP programming is structured around five core pillars: Academic & Testing Support, Mentoring, JUMP Community Building/Baltimore Community Connections, Health Professions Exploration, and Pre-Health Pathways & Milestones.

Requirements

Master's Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or related fields including social science is required.
Three years of relevant advising experience required.
Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
Must be available and willing to work some evenings/weekends as required for events and programming.
Ability to use appropriate judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.
Extensive knowledge and experience managing holistic advising, assessment, academic and student affairs collaborations, diversity, and inclusion.
Exceptional interpersonal, oral, public speaking, writing, and listening skills.
Demonstrated experience developing, articulating, operationalizing, and assessing strategic priorities.
Proven ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues and to build positive and effective relationships.
Proven track record of establishing strategic relationships to strengthen program and service delivery.
Knowledge of the academic rigors of pursuing a career in science, medicine, or related health professions is required.
Demonstrated success working with and developing programming for a diverse student population, including first-generation students and students from limited-income families.
Demonstrated commitment to diversity in higher education--particularly science and/or medical education.
Demonstrated familiarity with technology – particularly computer software and data management systems, including but not limited to Google Apps, Microsoft Teams, and Microsoft Office Suite.

Nice To Haves

Three to five years’ experience in advising, mentoring or guiding college students; designing innovative programming; and establishing/maintaining collaborative working relationships with professionals.

Responsibilities

Support the curriculum efforts and programming for the JUMP Pillars: Academic & Standardized Testing Support and Health Professions Exploration.
Curate academic enhancement information and develop initiatives to support and boost JUMP Students' BCPM and overall GPAs and MCAT, GRE, DAT scores.
Curate and develop programs, panels, workshops, internships, fellowships, and research opportunities that support the exploration of health professions.
Coordinate workshops, events, and programming that deepens the understanding of diverse pathways and essential skills based on holistic review practices for JUMP students pursuing careers in the health professions.
Serve as an advisor to three of the JUMP Student Committees: Physician/ Scientist Track (MD/PHD) Committee, Humanities Committee, and the Health Professions Committee.
Coordinate students’ participation in professional development conferences (e.g., SNMA, LSMA) and visits to regional medical schools.
Collaborate with JUMP partners to support JUMP sophomores by coordinating a three-day off-campus program each August.
Provide holistic small group advising to JUMP Members and, on a limited as-needed basis, individual advising that prioritizes students’ knowledge of the pre-med pathway and specific skill-building.
Collaborate with the Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Office of Academic Advising to ensure students are receiving academic advising and success coaching, pre-professional advising, and holistic review advising.
Stay abreast of current and national trends affecting all prehealth students, including first-generation college students pursuing careers in health professions. Remain current in the field of pre-health advising, AAMC holistic review practices, and medical school admissions.
Collaborate with JUMP partners, including the Office of Pre-Professional Advising, Life Design, and the National Fellowships Program to enhance academic and post-graduation planning for JUMP students.
Facilitate referrals as appropriate.
Develop and manage programming-related budget and logistical outlines; procurement on behalf of the JUMP program for items, vendors, etc.
Conduct program evaluations and produce individual event reports as well as semester participation reports for designated programs.
Work with JUMP staff to recruit, train, and supervise undergraduate student interns and JUMP Fellows.
Manage the development of programs to enhance the academic and application development of JUMP students.
Manage and process JUMP student membership benefits and tier memberships.
Support the Director in maintaining a system to track student participation in JUMP programming and the Center for Student Success Initiatives.
Support the Director with academic and student development programs as needed.
