The Middlesex Vicinage is seeking self-starters interested in performing a variety of clerical, administrative, and other support functions in connection with proceedings instituted before courts or programs administered under the supervision of the courts, in support of the business operations of such courts, and as contact representatives for clients and customers or users of the services provided by the New Jersey Courts. Applicants to this positing may be considered for openings in various divisions, such as Civil, Criminal, Family, Probation, Finance and Operations.

Requirements

  • One year of experience performing a variety of clerical and support services to include keyboarding and one or more of the following: document or information processing, handling payments for fees, recording monies received, reconciling balances and/or scheduling meetings or appointments.
  • Ability to use a keyboard. No minimum speed required
  • Candidates selected to serve in a bilingual variant title must pass the New Jersey Civil Service Commission Bilingual Communicative Ability Test (BICAT) performance examination or provide proof of having established bilingual proficiency with the New Jersey Civil Service Commission.
  • One year of experience performing a variety of clerical and support services to include keyboarding and one or more of the following: document or information processing, handling payments for fees, recording monies received, reconciling balances or accounts and/or scheduling meetings or appointments.
  • One year of permanent status as of the announced closing date in the following career (classified) titles: Judiciary Clerk 3, Judiciary Clerk 3 Bilingual, Judiciary Account Clerk 2, Judiciary Account Clerk 2 Bilingual
  • US citizenship is not required.
  • Selected candidate must be authorized to work in the US according to Department of Homeland Security, US Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations.
  • Newly hired employees must agree to a thorough background check that will include fingerprinting.
  • All persons newly hired by the Judiciary within one year must establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey.

Nice To Haves

  • For some positions, applicants must have the ability to perform work which requires climbing and prolonged standing, stretching, bending and reaching to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • For some positions, the selected candidate must be able to frequently lift and carry supplies weighing from 30 to 50 pounds and, occasionally, materials weighing up to 75 pounds, in order to perform essential duties of the position.
  • Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform essential duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Work in an on-site or virtual courtroom
  • Preparing, calling and annotating the court calendar
  • Swearing in jurors
  • Administering oaths to witnesses
  • Maintaining custody of exhibits
  • Recording and maintaining records of court proceedings
  • Updating case information
  • Discussing daily court activities
  • Scheduling of conferences, hearings, trial adjournments, "back up" cases and other appointments or court events
  • Explaining Judiciary policies, procedures, and program eligibility requirements
  • Compiling and entering data into computer systems, entering appropriate case notes into computer system
  • Verifying records for accuracy, completeness and conformity with courts rules and other regulations and requirements
  • Issuing legal writs and other legal documents
  • Reconciling accounts, records, and documents to complete financial records
  • Handling payments
  • Performing other duties as assigned
