About The Position

This National Guard position is for an IT SPECIALIST (NETWORK/CUSTSPT), GS-2210-09/11, within the KS 190 Air Refueling Wing. The role involves administering classified and unclassified local area network (LAN) clients, monitoring network systems for optimal hardware and software function, and resolving complex network-related issues. The specialist will respond to customer assistance requests, troubleshoot hardware, software, and LAN/Client operating system problems, and evaluate workstations for compatibility and performance. Responsibilities include formatting hard drives, utilizing troubleshooting tools, managing network hardware and software inventories, and installing/configuring network equipment such as routers, bridges, and modems. The position also entails developing and maintaining base-wide procedures for networks, system operations, backups, and product installation. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Position designated Essential Personnel, may be subject to duty in preparation for, or in response to, state emergency/ disaster declaration. This designation will not exceed 14 calendar days per year unless otherwise approved in advance by the TAG.
• May occasionally be required to work other than normal duty hours; overtime may be required.
• Duties/responsibilities of job may significantly impact the environment. You are responsible to maintain awareness of your environmental responsibilities as dictated by legal and regulatory requirements, your organization, and its changing mission.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance within a year of appointment.
• May be required to travel by car, in military and/or commercial aircraft, and by other means of transportation as appropriate to perform temporary duty assignments.
• Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree. Degree must be in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management.
• OR Experience and Competencies: Experience must be IT related; the experience may be demonstrated by paid or unpaid experience and/or completion of specific, intensive training (for example, IT certification), as appropriate, in addition to the following below:

• SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS-9: Must have 1-year specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade, receiving, maintaining, and issuing data storage media for computer operations. Experience in scheduling the use of computer time for program processing. Experience collecting and sequentially staging input media with associated program instructions for processing. Experience in at least one programming language. Translating detailed logical steps developed by others into language codes that computers accept where this required understanding of procedures and limitations appropriate to use of a programming language. Experience interviewing subject-matter personnel to get facts regarding work processes and synthesizing the resulting data into charts showing information flow. Experience in analysis of the interrelationship of pertinent components of the system. Experience planning the sequence of actions necessary to accomplish the assignment. Experience scheduling the sequence of programs to be processed by computers where alternatives had to be weighed with a view to production efficiency.
• SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE GS:11: Must have 1-year specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade which includes experience, education, or training that approaches techniques and requirements appropriate to an assigned computer applications area or computer specialty area in an organization. Experience planning the sequence of actions necessary to accomplish the assignment where this entailed coordination with others outside the organizational unit and development of project controls. Experience that required adaptations of guidelines or precedents to meet the needs of the assignment. Experience preparing documentation on cost/benefit studies where is involved summarizing the material and organizing it in a logical fashion?
• If Substituting degree for some specialized experience: Must be Undergraduate or Graduate Education in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks.

Responsibilities

• Administer classified and unclassified local area network (LAN) clients.

• Format hard drive file systems using current industry standards and allocate file names using proper naming conventions.
• Utilize workstation troubleshooting tools.
• Receive network, communications, and related operating systems from various sources such as design centers and commercial vendors.
• Maintain an inventory of all network hardware and software.
• Install, configure, and troubleshoot network and application server hardware, network operating system software, and peripheral network equipment such as routers, bridges, cabling system, network interface cards, modems, multiplexers, and concentrators.
• Develop and maintain base wide procedures for networks, system operations, backups, and product assembly and installation.
