IT/OT Systems Engineer

GRIFOLS, S.A.•NC-Clayton, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

The IT/OT Systems Engineer is the primary IT contact for Operational Technology (OT) and laboratory technology stakeholders at Grifols’ Clayton and RTP sites. The role connects Manufacturing, Laboratories, and IT to help keep OT and laboratory systems and their supporting infrastructure available, stable, secure, compliant, and aligned with enterprise standards. It works with Automation, Engineering, Quality, site users, application owners, cybersecurity, central infrastructure teams, managed service providers, and technology vendors to organize technology demand, turn operational needs into technical requirements, and ensure clear ownership and follow-through for incidents, service requests, changes, lifecycle activities, and projects. This is a hands-on engineering position involving infrastructure administration, troubleshooting, application installation and support, patching, backup and recovery, connectivity support, documentation, and routine operational work under approved procedures and change controls. The engineer coordinates local delivery, communicates business impact, and confirms that completed work is accepted by OT and laboratory stakeholders and appropriately transitioned into production support.

Requirements

  • Advanced experience supporting IT/OT infrastructure, manufacturing systems, laboratory systems, site infrastructure, or comparable technology operations.
  • Hands-on knowledge of Windows server and endpoint administration, virtualization, networking, storage, backup and recovery, identity and access dependencies, and application support.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex issues across infrastructure, applications, connectivity, vendors, and operational processes.
  • Strong understanding of IT service management processes, including incident, request, problem, change, configuration, asset, and risk management.
  • Ability to work effectively with Manufacturing, Laboratories, Automation, Engineering, Quality, application teams, cybersecurity, and central IT organizations.
  • Ability to translate operational needs into structured technical requirements and coordinate implementation through the appropriate ownership path.
  • Experience coordinating managed service providers, vendors, central IT teams, or cross-functional delivery teams.
  • Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while focusing on operational impact, compliance, data integrity, and cybersecurity.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically at least five years of related experience.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, listen and understand spoken information, work independently with little guidance, plan work schedules, interact with others, handle sensitive information, build consensus across diverse groups, and apply abstract principles to complex conceptual issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, regulated manufacturing, or GxP laboratory environments.
  • Experience supporting industrial control or manufacturing platforms, laboratory systems, industrial networks, manufacturing applications, or validated computerized systems.
  • Knowledge of virtualization platforms, Windows Server, Active Directory, TCP/IP networking, firewalls, backup technologies, monitoring, patching, and endpoint-management tools.
  • Awareness of infrastructure qualification, computer system validation, data integrity expectations, cybersecurity controls, and formal change control.
  • Experience with ServiceNow or an equivalent IT service management and configuration management platform.
  • Relevant certifications or training in ITIL, networking, infrastructure, virtualization, cybersecurity, Microsoft technologies, or OT security.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary IT contact for Manufacturing OT and laboratory technology stakeholders at the Clayton and RTP sites, connecting those groups with the IT organization.
  • Build working relationships with Manufacturing, Laboratories, Automation, Engineering, Quality, application owners, central IT, cybersecurity, and service providers; understand site processes, constraints, critical systems, and dependencies.
  • Communicate technology risks, service impacts, priorities, and recovery status to stakeholders and relevant IT teams.
  • Provide hands-on support for OT and laboratory systems and supporting infrastructure, including servers, virtualization, storage, backup, network connectivity, endpoints, interfaces, and related platforms within the assigned scope.
  • Perform approved system administration, troubleshooting, application installation and configuration support, patching, backup and recovery, account coordination, and operational maintenance.
  • Diagnose issues across infrastructure, applications, networks, endpoints, vendors, and business processes, and engage the appropriate resolver groups when escalation is needed.
  • Support system lifecycle activities such as deployments, upgrades, obsolescence planning, migrations, qualification or validation support, decommissioning, and documentation updates.
  • Maintain technical documentation, support procedures, inventories, dependency information, and knowledge needed for reliable production support.
  • Help maintain availability, stability, security, and compliance of OT and laboratory technology services; monitor and address operational risks, recurring issues, capacity constraints, unsupported components, cybersecurity gaps, backup concerns, and single points of failure.
  • Apply enterprise infrastructure and cybersecurity standards with the appropriate technology, security, OT, application, and site teams; follow incident, request, problem, change, configuration, asset, and risk-management processes and required approvals and evidence.
  • Support infrastructure readiness for manufacturing and laboratory initiatives, facility changes, application deployments, audits, inspections, shutdowns, and other operational events.
  • Collect and qualify technology demand, translate operational needs into technical requirements and acceptance criteria, and coordinate local technical work for projects while following enterprise standards, site procedures, cybersecurity requirements, and change controls.
  • Ensure the correct IT owner, application owner, service provider, vendor, or enterprise technology team is engaged; validate readiness and stakeholder acceptance before production use and ensure appropriate support handover.
  • Coordinate managed service providers, central IT teams, application teams, engineering partners, and OT or laboratory vendors; provide site context and monitor service quality, documentation, response, and follow-through.
  • Coordinate vendor access and on-site or remote activities according to cybersecurity, safety, change-control, and site requirements, and ensure vendor documentation is reviewed, retained, and handed over.
  • Provide technical response and local coordination during incidents or significant service disruptions; assess and communicate operational impact, engage required teams, and support recovery, root-cause analysis, post-incident reviews, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain focus on safe recovery, data integrity, compliance, business continuity, and approved technical standards.
  • Build and refresh technical skills, identify improvements to reliability and support processes, capture recurring challenges, support global technology programs in OT and laboratory environments, and preserve site technical knowledge.
