IR Scanning Electrician

Apple•Santa Clara, CA

About The Position

Apple’s Critical Facilities Electrical team is responsible for the safe and reliable operation of electrical systems and critical infrastructure across Apple’s NorCal Places portfolio. The team’s preventive program emphasizes early detection, root-cause analysis, and condition-based maintenance, working closely with engineering, operations, and capital projects. The IR Scanning Electrician is the dedicated thermographer responsible for infrared inspections of electrical equipment across Apple’s NorCal campuses. The role identifies anomalies before they become failures and supports the shift from reactive repair to predictive, condition-based maintenance. The electrician performs thermographic surveys of switchgear, panelboards, transformers, motor control centers, and distribution equipment; documents findings; prioritizes remediation with the electrical operations team; and contributes to the predictive maintenance program. The position reports to the Electrical Manager.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of commercial, industrial, utility, or critical-facilities electrical experience.
  • Current Level I infrared thermography qualification or certification from a recognized program aligned with an applicable industry standard or employer-approved written practice, such as ASNT SNT-TC-1A or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting infrared inspections of energized electrical distribution equipment rated from 120/208 V through 12 kV.
  • Proficiency with radiometric thermal-imaging cameras and infrared reporting software.
  • Ability to accurately interpret thermal patterns while accounting for load, emissivity, reflected temperature, environmental conditions, and equipment construction.
  • Ability to produce technically accurate, well-organized inspection reports and clearly communicate conditions requiring immediate escalation.
  • Ability to work independently while following established procedures and coordinating with site operations personnel.
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E electrical safe-work practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret single-line diagrams, panel schedules, and electrical drawings.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and work from ladders or lifts as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Infrared Thermography Level II certification or higher.
  • Proven experience conducting infrared surveys in high-reliability environments such as enterprise data centers or critical utility infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience establishing or scaling a predictive, condition-based infrared inspection program.
  • In-depth experience assessing switchgear, transformers, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, automatic transfer switches (ATS), busway, and emergency or standby generation systems.
  • Working familiarity with arc-flash assessments, equipment incident-energy labeling, and compliance documentation under NFPA 70E.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and on-demand infrared thermographic scans on energized electrical equipment in accordance with NFPA 70E.
  • Identify, classify, and document thermal anomalies, producing inspection reports with severity ratings and recommended corrective actions.
  • Partner with the electrical operations team to schedule remediation and verify that corrective work resolves identified findings.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and care for thermal imaging equipment and supporting test gear.
  • Track scan history, findings, and trends in the team’s reporting system to support condition-based decisions.
  • Support root-cause analysis on electrical incidents and near-misses by contributing thermal data and field observations.
  • Contribute to an inclusive environment by respecting differences and maintaining curiosity to learn.
  • Foster and maintain excellent relationships with stakeholders.
