About The Position

CNBC is seeking an exceptional investing journalist to lead its signature evening newsletter for retail investors. This daily briefing aims to help readers understand market movements, their impact on portfolios, and upcoming events. The newsletter will provide sharp analysis connecting markets, companies, sectors, and the economy, going beyond daily headlines to identify opportunities and risks. It will also curate top CNBC content, highlighting key insights and previewing important interviews and programming. The ideal candidate will be a skilled reporter, analyst, and storyteller with a deep understanding of investing and financial markets, strong newsletter writing abilities, and the capacity to make a fast-paced news cycle engaging and indispensable. They should be adept at discerning important trends, identifying key investing lessons, and anticipating future market-shaping events. Collaboration with CNBC's markets, economics, technology, politics, television, digital video, and social teams is crucial to ensure comprehensive reporting and clear investing insights.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of experience covering investing, financial markets, public companies or the economy for a major news organization.
  • Strong understanding of equity markets, investing principles, portfolio construction and the economic forces that drive stocks, sectors and market sentiment.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce insightful investing analysis that helps retail investors better understand market developments and make more informed decisions.
  • Experience writing newsletters or other recurring editorial products that engage audiences through a distinctive voice and compelling storytelling.
  • Excellent news judgment, with the ability to identify the day's most important investing themes and separate meaningful developments from market noise.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex financial and economic concepts into clear, engaging and accessible journalism.
  • Experience covering earnings, corporate news, economic data, Federal Reserve policy and other market-moving events.
  • Proven ability to generate original reporting and cultivate relationships with investors, strategists, analysts, economists and corporate executives.
  • Ability to synthesize reporting from across a newsroom into a cohesive editorial product while meeting daily deadlines.
  • Strong understanding of the needs of retail investors and a passion for helping readers make sense of the markets through practical investing insights.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work seamlessly across editorial, television, digital video, social, product and audience teams.

Responsibilities

  • Write CNBC's flagship evening investing newsletter, delivering a smart, engaging and insightful briefing after every market close.
  • Explain what the day's market action means for retail investors and help readers understand how the news could affect their portfolios.
  • Identify the most important investing themes, opportunities and risks emerging from the day's news.
  • Connect developments across earnings, economic data, monetary policy, politics and global events into clear investing takeaways.
  • Look ahead to the next trading day by identifying the catalysts, earnings reports, economic releases and market events investors should be watching.
  • Produce original reporting by developing relationships with investors, strategists, economists, analysts and corporate executives.
  • Write with a distinctive voice that builds reader loyalty and makes the newsletter an essential daily habit for investors.
  • Collaborate closely with CNBC's television, digital video, social and editorial teams to surface the strongest reporting and insights from across the newsroom.
  • Use audience data and newsletter analytics to continually improve engagement, open rates and subscriber growth.
  • Contribute enterprise investing stories and analysis across CNBC's platforms as needed.
  • Work as a collaborative team player across all Versant News platforms.
