About The Position

WeVote, a nonpartisan nonprofit technology startup, is seeking a volunteer Newsletter Writer / Content Developer to contribute 2-3+ hours per week. This remote role, based within the US, is an opportunity to use and develop skills while supporting American Democracy. The writer will create engaging and informative content for newsletters, sharing news, information, goals, and achievements of the all-volunteer organization. Responsibilities include drafting content aligned with the mission and values, assisting with content planning, and potentially contributing to research, interviewing, and writing stories, volunteer profiles, event information, and related news to build awareness and provide support. The ideal candidate possesses excellent writing and editing skills and has experience with volunteers or in a nonprofit setting. This role is well-suited for journalism students building portfolios or freelance journalists interested in covering the evolving election landscape.

Requirements

  • Current journalism students or recent graduates seeking portfolio-building opportunities
  • Freelance journalists interested in civic engagement and voting rights coverage
  • Strong writing and editing skills with journalism clips to share
  • Experience with WordPress

Responsibilities

  • Write for one or both of our newsletters: one is internal for WeVote volunteers, and the other is an external newsletter reaching voters nationwide
  • Cover a wide range of topics, creating news articles for the WeVote Blog. Recent stories we've published have been about voting laws, election security, voting access, Generation Z trends, and the U.S. Supreme Court taking up a legal challenge to a mail-in voting deadline in Illinois
  • Help voters make informed decisions through straightforward, informational reporting
  • Pitch story ideas and work on editor assignments
  • Research and interview sources for volunteer profiles, event coverage, and election-related news
  • Collaborate with editors and team members (includes weekly Tuesday meetings, ~1 hour)
  • Receive bylines and clips for your portfolio
