About The Position

The Department of Economic Security (DES) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual to join their team as an Investigator 2. This is a temporary position within the Office of Inspector General (OIG). The primary duty is to conduct preliminary desktop investigations into allegations of benefit fraud received through various channels, including Department referrals, complaints from other agencies, and public communications. This involves reviewing fraud investigation requests to ensure they meet established criteria, making independent decisions on the validity and progression of allegations, and analyzing information from confidential databases. Cases meeting criteria will be assigned to OSI field investigators statewide. The role also includes scanning Reports of Investigation (ROI) into the OnBase electronic filing system, maintaining investigative case files according to the DES Records Retention Schedule, processing outgoing subpoenas, monitoring inventory, and completing assigned projects. In-state travel within Arizona is required. The State of Arizona promotes a work culture of flexibility, autonomy, and trust, with opportunities for remote work within Arizona.

Requirements

  • Must maintain the statutorily required liability insurance if operating a personally owned vehicle on state business.
  • Must successfully pass background and reference checks.
  • Must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
  • Must apply for and show proof of receipt of a valid fingerprint clearance card or provide documentation of application for a fingerprint clearance card if having contact with children or vulnerable adults.
  • Must obtain ACJIS Terminal Operator Certification within 30 days of hire and maintain certification throughout the course of this assignment with the unit.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preliminary investigations and evaluates allegations of benefit fraud received via Department referrals, complaints from other agencies, and the public via written or hotline communications.
  • Reviews requests for fraud investigations to determine if they meet the criteria set by OSI and federal and/or state funded public assistance programs.
  • Makes independent decisions about the validity of the allegation, whether to accelerate its focus or whether to cease all efforts.
  • Researches, identifies, selects, and analyzes documents and information from confidential and sensitive databases/sources.
  • Assigns cases to OIG OSI field investigators throughout AZ for further investigation when the referral meets the criteria.
  • Oversees the scanning of each Report of Investigation (ROI) into the electronic filing system (OnBase).
  • Retains a copy of each ROI and related documents in accordance with the DES Records Retention Schedule.
  • Responsible for a variety of administrative support functions for OSI units statewide, including subpoenas and monitoring/maintaining inventory.
  • Attends staff meetings, assists OIG OSI colleagues with various projects, and performs other duties as assigned.
