Albany Medical Center•Albany, NY
•$70,068 - $108,605

About The Position

The Interventional Radiology Technologist I (CVIT I) works in Albany Medical Center's high-acuity Adult Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, applying radiologic imaging skills in invasive cardiovascular care. The role includes a structured, competency-based orientation that builds on existing radiologic technology skills and develops expertise in cardiovascular imaging, hemodynamic monitoring, procedural support, cardiac catheterization equipment, and progressively advanced procedural responsibilities. The technologist supports care for a diverse and complex cardiovascular patient population, including patients undergoing acute STEMI intervention, coronary procedures, structural heart interventions, mechanical circulatory support, and other advanced cardiovascular therapies. They work alongside cardiovascular technologists, nurses, interventional cardiologists, structural heart specialists, and trainees. Previous cardiac catheterization laboratory experience is not required. As competencies develop, the technologist may take on increased procedural independence and advance within the Medical Imaging Technologist career pathway. Responsibilities begin with imaging, hemodynamic monitoring, and procedural support and progress to supervised scrub training with a designated preceptor. Progression is based on demonstrated competency and departmental validation. After orientation and validation of required competencies, the technologist participates in the emergency on-call rotation, including a shadow call period before independent call participation. The role requires compliance with New York State requirements, radiation-safety principles, departmental standards, and the established scope of practice.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Radiologic Technology or qualifying Medical Imaging program.
  • Strong understanding of radiologic imaging principles and cardiovascular anatomy.
  • Knowledge of fluoroscopic imaging and radiation-safety practices.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to anticipate procedural needs and respond to emergent situations.
  • Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) certification must be obtained within the required timeframe for continued New York State licensure.
  • Current Licensed Radiologic Technologist license and registration, or eligibility to practice under a valid New York State temporary permit, required upon hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) required upon hire.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) required within 180 days.
  • Equivalent combinations of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • Participation in the emergency on-call rotation is required after successful completion of orientation and validation of required competencies.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous cardiovascular, acute-care, procedural, or interventional imaging experience.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred within 180 days.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured, competency-based Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory orientation and complete departmental evaluations.
  • Provide radiologic imaging support during cardiovascular procedures in accordance with New York State requirements, radiation-safety principles, and departmental standards.
  • Develop and apply competency in cardiovascular imaging techniques, angiographic positioning, radiation-dose optimization, image acquisition and quality, and safe use of cardiovascular imaging systems within the established scope of practice.
  • Perform applicable independent imaging procedures, including mechanical prosthetic valve fluoroscopy, under appropriate physician supervision, with physician review and approval of acquired images.
  • Develop competency in catheterization laboratory workflow, Epic procedural documentation, McKesson hemodynamic monitoring, cardiovascular anatomy and hemodynamics, procedural equipment and supplies, and sterile technique.
  • Recognize and communicate relevant changes in cardiac rhythm, hemodynamic status, and patient condition within the established scope of the role.
  • Identify, prepare, and incorporate diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular equipment and supplies according to patient and procedural needs; progressively anticipate procedural needs as competency develops.
  • Progress to supervised scrub training with a designated preceptor, beginning with diagnostic cardiac catheterization and limited interventional procedures, and advance scrub responsibilities after competency demonstration and departmental validation.
  • Complete required training and competency validation for New York State certification for intravascular contrast administration; perform contrast-related responsibilities only after applicable requirements are met.
  • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory team in safe and efficient patient care while developing competencies for independent practice and career advancement.
  • After successful orientation and competency validation, complete a shadow call period and participate in the emergency on-call rotation for STEMI and other time-sensitive cardiovascular emergencies within the established scope of the role.
