About The Position

LSS is seeking an on-call interpreter to provide in-person interpretation and written translation for non-English speakers seeking medical, legal, and community services in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area. The role is based at the Multi-Cultural Center and surrounding locations; applicants must reside in the Sioux Falls metropolitan area. The schedule is flexible and on-call, with 0–29 hours per week. Pay varies based on the appointment. The employer does not provide visa sponsorship or relocation assistance. Interpreters communicate with clients before sessions, review session briefings, and deliver accurate, real-time interpretation while conveying intent and context. They are expected to maintain a professional demeanor and respect cultural differences and special needs. Medical assignments may require compliance with health screening, vaccination, and medical examination requirements set by assignment locations or partner organizations. LSS offers training for medical interpretation, employee recognition, an Employee Assistance Program, a 401(k) with a 3% match, and a hiring bonus of up to $300 for external candidates. Requirements

Reside in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota metropolitan area.
Be at least 18 years of age.
Have a high school diploma or GED; an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered.
Have bilingual skills and fluency in written and spoken English and at least one target language.
For medical interpretation assignments, meet applicable health screening, vaccination, and medical examination requirements established by assignment locations or partner organizations.
Successfully complete required background screenings in accordance with agency policy and applicable law.
Possess a valid driver's license, maintain proof of automobile insurance, and meet agency requirements for approved driver status, or be able to obtain approved driver status upon hire.
Be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire.

Nice To Haves

Fluency in Spanish, Vietnamese, Kunama, French, Swahili, Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, Haitian-Creole, Tigrinya, or other high-demand languages is preferred.
Fluency in additional languages is encouraged.

Responsibilities

Provide professional in-person verbal and/or written interpretation across the Sioux Falls area.
Provide written translation services across the Sioux Falls area.
Conduct pre-session communications with clients and non-English speakers.
Receive and review session briefings before interpreting.
Deliver real-time, face-to-face interpretation, accurately translating spoken statements in both directions.
Use active listening to interpret intent and context effectively.
Maintain a professional demeanor and respect cultural differences and special needs.
