About The Position

The Interpreter provides language assistance to patients, families, and visitors regarding medical procedures, complex discharges, and potentially litigable situations. The role supports accurate communication, helps resolve issues or perceived problems, and ensures patients and families understand documents requiring their signatures. The position is part-time, scheduled for 24 hours per week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

Requirements

Two years of experience interpreting medical terminology.
Spanish-language interpreters must meet Methodist Health System’s defined Spanish proficiency requirements.

Nice To Haves

Associate degree preferred.
Three years of interpretation services preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide timely and accurate interpretation for non-English-speaking patients, families, and visitors.
Assess patients’ understanding and evaluate the need for additional language assistance, family outreach, or referrals.
Translate legal documents, including documents requiring a patient’s or family member’s signature, and ensure they fully understand them.
Assist medical staff with gathering patient background information as requested.
Promote positive patient relations.
Maintain positive working relationships with employees, other hospitals, and community agencies to support effective communication among patient contacts.
Provide emotional support to people involved in the patient’s welfare, including spouses, children, siblings, and friends.
Collect response-time and other quality-of-service indicators to support evaluation of translation services overall and by individual staff member.
Maintain knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines affecting the Language Assistant area.
Develop effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state and federal laws and accreditation agency and health-plan program requirements.
Perform other job duties as assigned.
