About The Position

The Interpretation Services Representative facilitates communication among families, patients, health care providers, and hospital personnel who speak different languages. The role requires cultural competency, respect for everyone involved, and mastery of medical and colloquial terminology to support mutual trust and accurate communication in health care. The representative also accurately translates written health care information for Spanish-speaking families, health care providers, and hospital personnel.

Requirements

• Familiarity with basic medical terminology in Spanish and English.
• Reliable transportation.

• Bachelor’s degree, associate degree, or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Adhere to hospital policies and procedures and ethical, corporate compliance, and integrity guidelines.
• Interpret medical and health care information and instructions from English into Spanish for Spanish-speaking patients and families.
• Interpret questions from Spanish-speaking families to physicians and other health care personnel.
• Sight-translate consents, protocols, discharge orders, and other materials from English into Spanish and vice versa.
• Translate, proofread, and edit written health care information in Spanish in a timely manner.
• Proofread Spanish-language health care information received from a contract agency.
• Facilitate the flow of requested translations and interpretations, prioritizing according to urgency or situation.
• Sensitize hospital employees to the specialized health care needs of Hispanic/Latino patients and their families.
• Maintain an accurate database of encounters handled by Interpretation Services.
• Provide reports to the manager/director as needed.
• Participate in departmental meetings and process improvement.
• Suggest improvements to work processes.
• Use the computer and software applications required for the job.
• Use resources and information to support patients as needed.
• Occasionally drive for Driscoll Children’s Hospital business.
