About The Position

The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator provides Spanish/English interpretation between patients/families and hospital service providers. This position coordinates the system of interpretation requests, arranges coverage of those requests and maintains data on interpretation needs. The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator assists hospital staff to develop cultural competency in working with Latino populations.

Requirements

  • Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Undergraduate degree in human services or related field, preferred.
  • Bicultural preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Spanish/English interpretation between patients/families and hospital service providers.
  • Coordinate the system of interpretation requests.
  • Arrange coverage of interpretation requests.
  • Maintain data on interpretation needs.
  • Assist hospital staff to develop cultural competency in working with Latino populations.
  • Conduct patient/family interactions with respect for differing culture, beliefs and levels of understanding.
  • Maintain an efficient and accurate system of logging and filling requests for interpretation for all Spanish speaking only patients.
  • Monitor written translation needs and verbal interpretation needs to develop effective ways to meet those needs.
  • Provide accurate written translation for all documents translated to Spanish.
  • Identify opportunities to improve patient care and maintain quality improvement data.
  • Assist hospital providers with their understanding and respect for cultural differences through informal and formal training.
  • Mediate cultural issues for staff and families.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and apply them to practice.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
  • Demonstrate support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.
