About The Position

Securian Canada is seeking a strategic communicator, trusted advisor, and strong storyteller to join their Internal Communications team on a 12-month maternity leave coverage contract. In this role, the individual will help shape how employees experience Securian Canada by working closely with leaders and stakeholders across the organization to deliver clear, engaging, and meaningful communications that connect employees to the company's strategy, culture, and purpose. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys building relationships, managing multiple priorities, and transforming complex information into communications that inform, inspire, and drive action. The role offers a high degree of autonomy, broad organizational visibility, and the chance to influence employee experience across the company. The position follows a hybrid work model, requiring employees to work from the Toronto or Waterloo office twice a month. Securian Canada utilizes artificial intelligence tools responsibly in its recruitment process for application review and assessment efficiency, but these tools do not replace human decision-making, and all applications are manually reviewed.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to make complex ideas easy to understand.
  • Experience developing and executing communication plans for a variety of audiences and stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship-building and stakeholder management skills.
  • Excellent organization and project management abilities, with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • A consultative mindset with the confidence to advise leaders and recommend communication solutions.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.
  • Experience in internal communications.

Nice To Haves

  • Communications consulting or advisory experience.
  • Experience supporting organizational change or change management initiatives.

  • Experience in financial services, insurance, or another regulated industry.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with leaders and stakeholders across the organization to develop and execute communication strategies that support business priorities and employee engagement.
  • Create clear, compelling communications across multiple channels, including newsletters, email campaigns, intranet content, leadership messages, and town halls.
  • Translate complex business updates and organizational initiatives into meaningful and actionable messages for employees.
  • Provide communications counsel and support to leaders, helping them communicate confidently and effectively.
  • Manage multiple communications projects simultaneously, balancing priorities, timelines, and stakeholder needs.
  • Measure communication effectiveness, gather feedback, and recommend improvements that enhance employee understanding and engagement.
  • Help bring our culture to life through storytelling that highlights our people, achievements, and impact.
