About The Position

The Gray Media Training Program at WEEK-TV in East Peoria, Illinois, is seeking interns to support newsroom operations. The successful candidate will have entry-level experience with editing and shooting video. The Student Intern will work closely with reporters, producers, and writers to learn how to edit news/sports/digital stories for daily newscasts. Interns will edit videos for news stories and assist with digital operations, including publishing content to the station website and supporting social media channels. This is an entry-level, part-time position for someone who wants to get into the broadcasting business.

Requirements

  • Entry-level experience with editing and shooting video.
  • Current enrollment as a college student (Junior or Senior status preferred).
  • Chasing a degree in Journalism, Communications, Sales, Marketing, or a related field.
  • A "doer" mindset: not afraid to get your hands dirty and take initiative.
  • Digital savvy: understand that media happens everywhere.
  • Strong work ethic: bring urgency, organization, and a "can-do" attitude to every shift.
  • Communication skills: ability to tell a story, pitch an idea, or explain a forecast with clarity and confidence.
  • Reliability: ready to commit to the full 10-week program and the 25-hour weekly schedule.
  • Passion for local: care about the community and want to see how local media makes a real difference.
  • Be currently enrolled in a college/university, preferably in your senior year.
  • Strong work ethic and organizational skills.
  • College student, seniors preferred, earning a degree in Journalism/Communications, Sales, or related fields, with a desire to get hands-on experience in the local media industry.
  • Dependable, energetic, organized, inquisitive, and work well with others.

Responsibilities

  • Support newsroom operations by helping gather news and information in the field.
  • Edit videos for news stories.
  • Assist with digital operations, including publishing content to the station website and supporting social media channels.
  • Step into the shoes of a producer, MMJ, meteorologist, or media sales executive and handle real-world assignments.
  • Create content that lives beyond the TV screen, including social media, streaming apps, and web stories.
  • Work side by side with seasoned veterans to gain insights.
  • Dedicate 25 hours per week for 10 weeks to mastering your specialty and building a professional-grade portfolio.
  • Tell stories that matter to the community or help local businesses grow through innovative media strategies.
