About The Position

The mission of the Department of Agriculture is to protect the health and safety of Arizona consumers, advance and support Arizona agriculture, and safeguard commerce. This is achieved by supporting farming, ranching and agribusiness in Arizona by protecting plants and animals, issuing agriculture and environmental licenses, inspecting farming practices and overseeing commerce standards and measurement devices. This internship aims to introduce animal agriculture sector responders across agencies and jurisdictions to the spectrum of response stakeholders needed to effectively respond to a Foreign Animal Disease (FAD) or mass mortality of livestock event in Arizona. It will also introduce responders to the fundamental and overarching differences in command-and-control structure of FAD responses from traditional all-hazards incident management.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of animal agriculture and/or emergency preparedness and response
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suites
  • Skills in verbal and written communication
  • Skills in creating bilingual training materials
  • Skills in problem solving
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects and setting priorities.
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to self-motivate
  • Ability to work independently or within a group
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish
  • Enrolled in curriculum leading toward a Bachelor's or Higher degree in Animal Health, Food or Plant Science, Veterinary Medicine, Emergency Management or related field.
  • Recent grad within 1 year.

Responsibilities

  • Development of bilingual training materials and SOPs for participants with enforcement authority roles and guides for participants providing public health outreach, surveillance and coordination support to FAD response.
  • Attend and take notes on project team meetings, assist with the planning and execution of tabletop exercises, conduct post training drills and assist with the creation and deployment of post-training assessment tools.
  • Assist with the development of educational materials for agricultural stakeholders and emergency response partners explaining the various options for mass depopulation and disposal in the face of a significant animal disease or mortality event.
