About The Position

This is a part-time internship opportunity for college-level students to perform job assignments closely related to their area of study. Any full-time college or graduate student may apply. This is a year-round internship with immediate openings. The position is in-person only; hybrid or remote schedules are not available. Total scheduled work hours will not exceed 25 hours per week (Monday through Friday). Intern positions do not include benefits and are not eligible for paid leave, paid holidays, retirement, or any type of insurance. The Real Estate Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the Port’s Real Estate Department, learning about tenant and agreement administration, market rent studies, pro formas, Port policies, and collaborating with departments like the Office of the General Counsel and Development Services. The intern will assist with updating abstracts and tenant information, short-term real estate agreement permits, rights of entry, easements, cost recovery, leasehold inspections, CPI rent increases, subleases, tenant communication, and related system updates. Experience will also be gained using SAP, Adobe, Microsoft Teams, Excel, and DocuSign. Responsibilities will increase throughout the internship, starting with learning department processes and assignments with guidance, then progressing to research, drafting, analysis, supporting agreements, and developing recommendations. All work will be developmental and supervised, with final decisions made by Port staff. Intern assignments may continue for up to two years, including one year post-graduation, based on program needs, funding, and performance.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled as a part-time student (generally six to eleven units) or full-time student (generally twelve units and above) at an accredited college or university (for Intern I)
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited graduate program leading to an advanced degree (MS, MBA, MPA, etc.) (for Intern II Graduate)
  • Currently enrolled in a program leading to a doctoral degree (Juris Doctorate, Ph.D., etc.) at an accredited college or university (for Intern II Doctorate)
  • School Enrollment Verifications are required to ensure satisfactory completion of required units and verify eligibility for pay increases
  • Must be able to pass a background check if assigned to maritime facilities
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation (including polygraph) if assigned to Harbor Police facilities
  • Complete an online application through the specified website
  • Attach a copy of unofficial transcripts (indicating degree award date)
