The Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) Public Relations and Thought Leadership team shares inspiring stories about veterans and the impact of WWP programming to honor military service, raise awareness of veterans’ needs, and highlight available resources. The team supports the organization through strategic communication planning, media relations, messaging, and content creation. The Public Relations Intern supports WWP by researching media opportunities and trends, creating content, assisting with media outreach, tracking earned media coverage, and helping support public awareness campaigns that advance the organization’s mission. APPLICANT ALERT: This is a paid internship opportunity for qualified applicants, and requires in-person attendance, three days each week at either our Jacksonville, Florida, or Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, office location. Requirements

  • Effective written and verbal communications skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to write and edit content using AP Style.
  • Understanding of news media and what makes a story newsworthy.
  • Research skills, including gathering, verifying, and synthesizing information from multiple sources.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Copilot, with an understanding of how to use AI tools responsibly and ethically.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and tact.
  • Unequivocal commitment to the highest standards of personal and business ethics and conduct.
  • Mission-driven, guided by core values, and a pleasure to work with.
  • Coursework or hands-on experience in writing, editing, or media/communications projects.
  • Participation in team-based and/or project-based assignments demonstrating the ability to meet deadlines and collaborate effectively.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.
  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college.

Nice To Haves

  • Related communications experience through volunteer work, student organizations, campus media, part-time roles, or prior internships.
  • Experience volunteering with a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
  • Pursuing a degree in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Research and identify media outlets, platforms, and channels to help reach target audiences.
  • Assist the public relations team with planning, executing, and reporting on strategic communications projects.
  • Support the development of media pitches and media lists to advance WWP’s media relations efforts; pitch media under supervision.
  • Create content — such as articles, fact sheets, and talking points — about WWP programs and services for distribution through external and internal channels.
  • Assist the public relations team in tracking and reporting WWP earned media coverage; contribute to regular and ad-hoc reports for department leadership.
  • Prepare agendas, presentations, and other materials for meetings as needed.
  • Support WWP teams in public awareness activities for special events, fundraisers, and key initiatives.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
