Intern - Forestry
About The Position
The Forestry Intern will support the Westervelt Forest Resources Group in a hands-on, field-based role designed to provide practical experience in forest management. This is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a degree in forestry, natural resources, or a related field to gain exposure to real-world operations and decision-making. Spend your summer working alongside professional foresters, wildlife managers, and land management experts while gaining hands-on experience in sustainable forestry operations. Westervelt's Forestry Internship provides real-world exposure to timberland management, harvest planning, reforestation, GIS applications, and operational decision-making across some of the Southeast's most productive forestlands.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, or a related field
- Willingness to relocate to one of the internship sites for the summer
- Strong work ethic, adaptability, and interest in fieldwork
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record

Responsibilities
- Assist foresters with harvest planning, contract administration, and field inspections.
- Participate in road layout, maintenance planning, and infrastructure assessments.
- Support silvicultural activities including site preparation, planting, herbicide applications, and stand evaluations.
- Gain exposure to nursery and seed orchard operations that support long-term forest sustainability.
- Assist with timber inventory, data collection, and GIS mapping projects.
- Monitor and implement Forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) to support responsible land stewardship.
- Work safely in a variety of field conditions across active timberland operations.
