About The Position

Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS), the Government of Canada has embarked on one of the largest procurement projects since the Second World War. The NSS is a nation-building effort to create a sustainable Canadian shipbuilding industry, secure long-term job opportunities and build the next generation of ships for the Canadian Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy. Through its NSS–related work, Seaspan Shipyards is owning the redevelopment of our domestic shipbuilding industry on the West Coast and delivering on the promise of ships built in Canada, by Canadians. The Intern, Employee Relations works on the Employee Relations (ER) team and supports other team members on subject area issues, preparation for grievance meetings and arbitration hearings, and collective agreement interpretation and administration. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver.

Requirements

  • Current undergraduate student with a specialization and/or keen interest in Employee/Labour Relations, Human Resource management or employment & labour law.
  • Ability to build positive, collaborative relationships within the HR Department and at all levels of the organization.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to optimally address sensitive employee matters.
  • Adaptable to fast-paced and quickly changing business units and work priorities.
  • Proven attention to detail when reviewing Collective Agreements, Letters of Understanding, Discipline letters, Grievance Responses and program materials and processes.
  • Awareness of provincial legislation including the Human Rights Code, Labour Relations Code, and the Employment Standards Act.
  • Outstanding Excel, PowerPoint, and Word skills required.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the investigation of complaints under our Respect in the Workplace Policy.
  • Assists with the preparation / file management for grievances and disputes involving collective agreement interpretation, employee discipline and discharge, substance use issues and Human Rights complaints in the unionized environment.
  • In support of the ER function, proactively guides managers with the interpretation and application of relevant Company policies and programs.
  • Promotes a culture of inclusion with a focus on employee engagement, diversity, and inclusion programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
