About The Position

Serves as a tour guide in the Capitol Building by directing small to large groups through the Capitol Building. Assists the general public by serving as a public inquiry liaison for individuals or groups requesting information on the buildings and grounds included in the Capitol Complex, may answer questions pertaining to other tourist attractions in Springfield and the surrounding areas.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school or one year interpretive/guide experience.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of interpretive/guide techniques.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of Illinois history.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of historical research methods.
  • Requires ability to prepare reports and keep records.
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively with groups and local organizations, to meet the public courteously and answer questions in a tactful manner.
  • Applicants must be lawfully authorized to work in the United States.

  • Preference will be given to Illinois residents in the hiring and selection process, in accordance with the Illinois Secretary of State Merit Employment Code.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts tour for the general public and visiting groups through the Capitol Building; points out various spots of interest including artwork, architectural points, statues, legislative offices and various aesthetic characteristics of the Capitol Building, takes visiting groups into the gallery of the house and senate chambers when in session and may answer general questions pertaining to the Legislative process.
  • Assists the public and visitors in locating various departments to procure services and directs the general public and visitors to other office buildings or locations for requested services. Needs to know room locations in Capitol Building give all accurate information.
  • Hands out various literature and publications concerning services and programs of the State of Illinois. Gives out information on Special Events scheduled in the Capitol Complex.
  • Answers telephone inquiries and provides general information to callers; places calls to locate services for employees, visitors or the general public. May be required to fill in at the Illinois Visitors Center in the event of an absence.
  • Must be courteous, friendly and smile to groups/visitors/employees. Uniforms must be clean at all times.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
