About The Position

The Interim Resource School Nurse will provide professional health services and coordinate resources between the school, home, and community to support the overall health of students and staff for the 2025/2026 school year. This role involves assessing student health, planning interventions, ensuring a safe medical environment, disease prevention, and collaborating with various health disciplines and community programs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a Professional Nursing Program approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
  • Current license as a Registered Professional Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • 1-3 years experience in pediatrics, community health or related field.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required.
  • Licensing in School Nursing by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and evaluate students’ health, and the degree of significance of health problems on student educational progress.
  • Utilize effective techniques to counsel students, parents, and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health problems.
  • Assume a leadership role in the identification of students with health needs that interfere with effective learning; create a safe school that meets the medical needs of all students.
  • Consult and collaborate with the nurse leader when you exhaust your means and resources.
  • Provide programs for the prevention and control of disease.
  • Coordinate health services with other health disciplines in order to fulfill a total health education program.
  • Coordinate health services with community health programs.
  • Observe school facilities and recommend modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety of students and school personnel.
  • Respond to encountered health and social problems: Child abuse and neglect, Alcohol and other drug use, Nutrition problems & eating disorders, Teen pregnancy.
  • Collaborate/cooperate with community providers and state agencies to meet the health and social service needs of students.
  • Organize, carry out and report on mandated health screening programs and makes appropriate referrals and follow-up on vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening failures.
  • Is a resource to the student, parent, principal, and teachers in matters pertaining to health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and ability to administer medications appropriately, in keeping with school the policy and regulations on the administration of medication in the school.
  • Assess family history and home situations that may affect a student’s health via home visits when necessary.
  • Complete home evaluations for special education TEAM evaluations.
  • Participates in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems.
  • Maintain an accurate health record on each student.
  • Document First Aid and illness care provided to staff and students.
  • Completes accident reports, and maintains a log of health room activity.
  • Screen all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws, and makes recommendations for exclusion of students for lack of compliance to DPH regulations.
  • Recommend exclusion and monitors readmission to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
  • Maintain First Aid supplies and equipment in an appropriate location in the school.
  • May have to provide minimal toileting, feeding, and/or activities of daily living service to students.
  • Float to schools and go on field trips within the district per the discretion of the Nurse Leader and/or Administration.
