About The Position

Universal Health Services, Inc. (UHS) is a leading provider of hospital and healthcare services. Virginia Beach Psychiatric Center (VBPC) is a 100-bed psychiatric hospital offering acute psychiatric and substance abuse services for adults. VBPC is currently seeking a PRN Intake Clinician-RN who can work evenings, weekends, and holidays. This role involves providing telephonic or face-to-face mental health crisis triage, assessment, intervention, and disposition. The Intake Clinician will answer the crisis line, gather necessary information, and determine the appropriateness of assessments. They will provide clinically appropriate resolutions for information-only calls and refer routine calls to outpatient care. For urgent or emergent cases, they will schedule face-to-face assessments within 24 hours and refer calls not suitable for UHS systems to other appropriate providers or community resources.

Requirements

  • Required licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Must possess knowledge of current psychiatric diagnoses and treatment terminology.
  • Must possess knowledge of completed biopsychosocial patient assessments, including conducting formal mental status evaluation and patient medical history.
  • Must possess knowledge of community resources.
  • Must possess knowledge of third party payers, including managed care companies to develop and clinically appropriate crisis intervention and disposition plan.
  • Basic typing and computer literacy.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a degree and one or more years of direct or related mental health counseling experience.
  • Prefer mental health crisis counseling experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provides telephonic or face-to-face mental health crisis triage, assessment, intervention and disposition at Assessment and Referral Centers or "on-site" at general hospital emergency room, therapist's or physician's office.
  • Answers the telephone crisis line and obtains all pertinent demographic, clinical, marketing and third party information to determine the appropriateness of face-to-face telephonic assessment and clinical disposition of the caller; seeks supervision when caller requests information/data unfamiliar to counselor.
  • Provides clinically appropriate resolution to those calls evaluated as information only.
  • Provides clinically appropriate telephonic disposition to those clients whose calls are evaluated as routine; referring to outpatient care as appropriate.
  • Schedules face-to-face clinical assessments within twenty-four (24) hours if the call is evaluated as urgent or emergent.
  • Refers calls not appropriate for care within the UHS systems matrix to other clinically appropriate providers and/or community resources.
