About The Position

BWXT's Advanced Technologies (AT) group researches, designs, and develops innovative new nuclear reactors, nuclear rocket propulsion systems, and radioisotope production systems for both internal and external customers. As an Instrumentation and Control (I&C) System Design Engineer, you will contribute to a variety of projects in a team environment. Your duties will include developing control system requirements, architectures, and interfaces, detailed design of control systems, specifying instruments and sensors, performing setpoint calculations, and logic development for a wide variety of systems and subsystems. This role requires a broad, multi-disciplined background in both I&C and electrical systems.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics is required.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of related experience is required.
  • Must have design experience in instrumentation and/or control systems.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills including technical writing.
  • Must have working knowledge of nuclear-related IEEE standards, e.g. IEEE-603, -323, etc.
  • Must be familiar with standard MS Office applications.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) or Department of Defense (DOD) security clearance, whichever is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Detailed knowledge of NEC standards, NRC guidelines, and nuclear-related IEEE standards.
  • System modeling and simulation experience in Flownex or Simulink and exposure to SysML.
  • Expertise in autonomous control algorithms and systems.
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering principles and tools including INCOSE guidelines model-based systems engineering, CAMEO and/or PLM systems such as Enovia.
  • Ability to design, develop, and/or specify sensors for extreme operating environments.
  • Familiarity with nuclear power plant systems.
  • Active DOD or DOE security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Work independently and within a team environment to develop innovative solutions to complex problems, infusing best practices and experience.
  • Develop algorithms, architectures, and requirements for control systems.
  • Utilize system and interface requirements to prepare appropriate design documentation.
  • Develop system-level design documents, including requirements, specifications, setpoint documents, control narratives, and system design descriptions.
  • Develop component-level design documents to select and specify I&C hardware, including sensors, PLCs, processors, I/O devices and embedded controllers.
  • Provide technical oversight of vendors designing and/or implementing components and systems to BWXT specifications.
  • Collaborate on the creation, development, and presentation of technical briefings.
  • Recognize and solve problems. Recommend solutions to technical problems.
  • Interface, coordinate, and support other design disciplines such as mechanical design, system design, procurement, and testing.
  • Contribute to proposals, RFQ’s and business development efforts as needed.
