About The Position

The Instructor provides high-quality instruction to Adult Learners in Adult Basic Education (ABE)/High School Equivalency (HSE) classes while creating engaging, technology-supported lessons that respond to students’ learning needs and goals. The Instructor assesses student progress, maintains learning portfolios, and uses assessment results to inform instruction and support student retention. The Instructor works collaboratively with program staff and Case Managers to support student success, participates in professional development, and ensures compliance with program requirements and performance benchmarks.

Requirements

  • Two years teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with curriculum development and lesson planning
  • Must be comfortable with learner-centered, participatory lessons and a project-based approach
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must be able to create an engaging and welcoming learning environment
  • Willing to go above and beyond program mandates for the benefit of the students
  • Ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to supporting communities who have experienced systemic oppression and bias (e.g. people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice involved persons, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Effectively teach reading comprehension, standard English grammar, essay writing, math and test-taking skills to adult basic education students
  • Responsible for creating curriculum and lesson plans
  • Create engaging instructional strategies and lesson plans, integrating technology
  • Provide instruction in math and /or literacy, including group instruction and one-on-one tutoring
  • Collaborate with the Education Specialist on curriculum development and instructional planning, and prepare and submit lesson plans as requested to support program quality and instructional consistency
  • Work collaboratively with Case Mangers to support students in achieving their educational, workforce, and personal goals while contributing to the successful attainment of program benchmarks and contractual requirements
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and complete the required number of training hours, in collaboration with the Program Coordinator to ensure compliance with program and contract requirements and to enhance instructional effectiveness
  • Work closely with the Program Coordinator and Program Director to prepare for and participate in announced and unannounced monitoring visits conducted by funding agencies or contract managers, ensuring that instructional documentation and classroom practices are aligned with program expectations
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the performance benchmarks, outcomes, and deliverables established by program contract, and collaborate with the Program Coordinator to support the achievement of those goals through high-quality instruction, accurate documentation, and student retention efforts
  • Evaluate student progress using standardized assessment tools and in-class quizzes
  • Adapt teaching style and strategies to maximize student learning and retention
  • Meet with Program Director / Program Coordinator on a regular basis to discuss progress of participants
  • Maintain students’ portfolio
  • Refer participants internally for support services as needed and follow-up to ensure services are being offered
  • Complete other related assignments as directed by Program Director and program administrators
