About The Position

Montgomery College seeks a full-time criminal justice faculty member in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Criminal Justice beginning January 2027 for the 2026-2027 academic year. We seek an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to students, and the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner. The successful candidate will be committed to teaching in a multicultural two-year environment and welcome the opportunity to work with students with diverse learning abilities. Montgomery College provides an excellent opportunity to teach in a large, urban community college setting. This position is part of a collective bargaining unit. With over 500 students majoring in criminal justice across two criminal justice programs, faculty strive to meet students’ diverse academic needs by offering a wide array of dynamic and challenging courses that are taught in multiple formats and at various times, ensuring ease of access for our busy students. The curricula are designed for individuals currently employed in criminal justice professions as well as students interested in pursuing careers in the ﬁeld. Montgomery College criminal justice students transfer to some of the most prestigious colleges and universities throughout the country, including the University of Maryland, College Park, Towson University, and the University of Maryland Global Campus. Montgomery College criminal justice faculty actively engage in a number of student support and co-curricular initiatives as evidenced by their efforts in the development of open education and zero-cost instructional materials, embedded academic and career advising, and external partnerships with practitioners that expose students to diverse curricular and career pathways in the social sciences. Faculty also work closely with industry partners on the program advisory committee to develop curriculum updates, articulation agreements, career workshops, student ﬁeld trips, and continuing education for criminal justice professionals. Faculty duties include classroom instruction, assessment, curriculum development, advising, professional inquiry, committee work, and the utilization of instructional technology. Many courses are taught using open educational resources (OERs), yielding cost savings for students, and providing faculty with the opportunity to curate diverse, relevant, and current instructional materials. Incoming faculty will utilize OERs in alignment with the other faculty in the discipline. Teaching assignments may include various delivery modalities, such as in-person synchronous online, asynchronous online, HyFlex, hybrid, and/or blended formats. Courses may be held during daytime, evening, and weekend hours. Montgomery College has three campuses and instructs courses at area high schools and the College's East County Educational Center. Faculty may be assigned to any of these locations.

Requirements

Master’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, law, or a related discipline Graduate coursework must reflect depth and breadth in criminal justice.
Recent teaching experience at the post-secondary level. Teaching done at the level of a graduate student, teaching assistant, or government agency/academy trainer will be considered.
Ability to effectively engage with and facilitate learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
Demonstrated commitment to student success, including increasing retention, transfer, graduation, career readiness, and community engagement.
Authorization to work in the United States without employer visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

Juris Doctor or Doctorate in Criminal Justice or a related discipline.
Experience teaching a variety of courses in criminal justice.
Evidence of innovative curriculum development to serve diverse student populations.
Demonstrated experience teaching in various modalities (e.g., in-person, blended/hybrid, HyFlex, and online).
Experience using teaching technologies (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).
Experience providing academic advising, career advising, and other student support services.
Evidence of ongoing professional development.
Experience coordinating programs and serving on committees, advisory groups, and governance councils.

Responsibilities

Teach 30 semester hours of courses per academic year, including Administration of Justice and upper-level offerings related to each of three subsystems of the criminal justice system, as appropriate.
Teach a varied schedule of courses that may include day, night, early morning, weekend, online, off campus, dual enrollment, and/or accelerated sections. Opportunities may exist for teaching summer and winter classes.
Serve on or lead department, discipline, campus, or college-wide committees.
Participate in criminal justice program coordination and mentor part-time faculty.
Apply culturally relevant and empathetic pedagogies to the teaching and learning process.
Engage students in their learning through active and collaborative learning approaches.
Engage in student outreach events to increase visibility of criminal justice programs and to improve the learning outcomes of students taking criminal justice classes.
Incorporate the use of educational enterprise platforms (such as Blackboard) into instruction, including zero-cost resources in the development and delivery of instruction.
Communicate with criminal justice faculty on other campuses to ensure a consistent student learning experience.
Implement embedded advising and embedded classroom support services.
Advise students about discipline course offerings, academic planning, related certiﬁcates, transfer opportunities, and careers in criminal justice.
