About The Position

This is a contract position for an Instructional Designer Lead, primarily working remotely with occasional on-site requirements in Livermore, CA. The role involves leading the design and development of technical apprenticeship courses for Power Generation trades. Responsibilities include conducting needs assessments, collaborating on learning strategies, guiding the use of learning technologies, coaching other instructional designers, managing projects, facilitating meetings, and presenting to stakeholders. The role also requires collecting and analyzing training effectiveness metrics for continuous improvement and managing project close-out activities. A separate contract role for an Instructional Designer is also described, focusing on designing and developing training materials for apprenticeships in the Power Generation utility industry, including hands-on activities, guides, videos, assessments, and simulations. This role involves task analysis, defining learning objectives, applying company standards, and participating in milestone meetings with subject matter experts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • At least 5 years of instructional design experience, including 2 years in a leadership or mentoring role.
  • Strong knowledge of instructional design for classroom and skilled trades environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing multi-year technical training programs.
  • Proven experience managing small to mid-sized projects.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate across functions with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Articulate Storyline, video production, and web design tools.
  • 3+ years of experience developing instructor-led training for technical skills; such as electrical utilities or related industries.
  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design or education-related areas of study.
  • Skilled in instructional design methodologies and technical writing.
  • Experienced in PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and Teams.
  • Self-manage assigned tasks and deadlines to complete deliverables on time.
  • Work closely with team and subject matter experts to proactively communicate concerns, issues, and risks.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing apprenticeship programs in skilled trades.
  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, or related field.
  • Experience working in the utility industry, trades, or a similar environment.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Questionmark, Author-It, MS Teams, and virtual learning platforms.
  • Experience in hydroelectric operations, general construction, and heavy equipment operation

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of technical apprenticeship courses for Power Generation trades.
  • Conduct needs assessments and front-end analyses (FEA) to identify training requirements and recommend effective learning solutions.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Learning Strategists and Instructional Designers to determine learning strategies, create curriculum maps, and appropriate assessment approaches.
  • Guide the use of appropriate learning technologies and tools to enhance training effectiveness.
  • Coach and support Instructional Designers to follow the ADDIE model and to meet quality standards. Conduct quality assurance (QA) reviews.
  • Estimate project costs and develop schedules in collaboration with the Senior Learning Strategist and Instructional Designer.
  • Manage project execution ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within budget.
  • Facilitate key project meetings, including Kick-offs, Betas, Train-the-Trainers, and Pilots.
  • Present proposals and project updates to stakeholders, including apprenticeship committees.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for improvement. Collect and analyze training effectiveness metrics and apply continuous improvement strategies.
  • Archive course materials and complete project close-out activities.
  • Design and develop instructor-led and on-the-job training for apprenticeships in the Power Generation utility industry.
  • Develop learning materials for technical content, including hands-on practice activities, student guides, facilitator guides, scenarios, videos, assessments, simulations, and other instructional media.
  • Perform a detailed task analysis for each job function, business process, or system for which training will be developed.
  • Define learning objectives, and course structure aligned to stakeholder needs and to meet the constraints of the learning environment.
  • Work under the direction of the Senior Instructional Designer to apply company standards, guidelines, and templates.
  • Participate in milestone meetings with subject matter experts, including task analysis, alpha, beta, train the trainer, and pilot.
  • Engage with subject matter experts for ongoing content review and validation.
