About The Position

Reporting to the Manager, Learning and Development, the Instructional Content Designer and Developer is responsible for the end-to-end analysis, design, development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of engaging learning solutions that support employee performance and organizational goals. Working collaboratively with subject matter experts and business stakeholders, this role creates effective learning experiences across multiple delivery formats, including e-learning, virtual instructor-led training, instructor-led training, and blended learning solutions. The role also supports learning-content publishing, quality assurance, maintenance, and learner experience within the learning management system, Absorb, and facilitates selected learning sessions as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Adult Education, Organizational Learning, Education, Human Resources, Communications, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience designing and developing workplace or organizational learning solutions, including eLearning and virtual or instructor-led learning.
  • Advanced proficiency with Articulate 360, including Storyline and Rise, and proficiency with multimedia and video-editing software.
  • Strong knowledge of adult learning principles, instructional design methodologies, assessment practices, and eLearning standards and specifications such as SCORM.
  • Experience publishing, testing, organizing, maintaining, and retiring content within a Learning Management System (LMS), strong preference for experience with Absorb.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, OneDrive, and SharePoint.
  • Strong planning, coordination, consultation, collaboration, facilitation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent learning priorities, SME contributions, review cycles, and deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience designing for blended or virtual learning environments.
  • Knowledge of applicable accessibility standards, including WCAG, AODA, and experience applying accessibility and inclusive design practices to digital learning.
  • Background in workplace learning, technical content, or performance consulting.
  • Experience using generative AI to develop, refine, and troubleshoot HTML-based eLearning components.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS, including the ability to review, modify, test, and troubleshoot code-based learning elements.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with SMEs and manage content development through both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration methods.
  • Strong writing, editing, information-synthesis, and content-organization skills, including the ability to translate complex information into clear and accessible learning content.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certifications in Learning and Development, such as APTD, CTDP, or CTP or equivalent, are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of xAPI is considered an asset.
  • Experience in Canva is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct learning and performance needs analyses to define target audiences, performance objectives, desired learning outcomes, appropriate delivery approaches, and measures of success.
  • Design and develop instructional content, including e-learning modules, facilitator resources, learner materials, job aids, and assessments.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs), leaders, project managers, and business stakeholders to gather organize, validate, and obtain approval for content and ensure accuracy.
  • Plan and manage synchronous and asynchronous content-gathering, review, and approval processes with SMEs and stakeholders, adapting the approach to participant availability and using structured questions, shared drafts, written feedback, recorded walkthroughs, and clearly defined decision points.
  • Elicit, organize, synthesize, and validate complex information from SMEs, identifying content gaps, inconsistencies, and areas requiring further clarification.
  • Select and apply appropriate instructional design methodologies, adult learning principles, and inclusive design practices based on the learning need, audience, content, delivery environment, and available resources.
  • Use Articulate 360, including Storyline and Rise, Canva, approved generative AI tools, and other authoring, multimedia, and code-based technologies to develop engaging and accessible digital learning products.
  • Use approved generative AI tools to create, adapt, refine, and troubleshoot HTML-based learning products for insertion into code blocks within eLearning.
  • Review and test AI-generated content and code for functionality, accuracy, accessibility, instructional value, privacy and security considerations, and compatibility with authoring tools and the LMS before implementation.
  • Conduct functional, usability, accessibility, and LMS compatibility testing of digital learning products and make iterative improvements based on test results, learner feedback, assessments, and available learning data
  • Manage the learning-content lifecycle, including scheduled and ad hoc reviews, version control, updates, approvals, publication, maintenance, and retirement, to ensure learning materials remain accurate and relevant.
  • Facilitate selected virtual and in-person learning sessions and workshops for employees at all levels, as required, using instructional techniques suited to the audience, learning objectives, content, accessibility needs, and delivery environment.
  • Configure, test, publish, organize, maintain, and retire learning content within the LMS, supporting accurate completion tracking, reporting configuration, content quality, and a consistent learner experience.
  • Develop and maintain templates, standards, workflows, and documented procedures for learning-content development, SME review, quality assurance, LMS publishing, maintenance, and retirement.
  • Apply accessibility and inclusive design practices throughout the design, development, testing, delivery, and maintenance of digital and facilitated learning solutions.
  • Evaluate and adopt emerging learning technologies, instructional design practices, and development methods that improve accessibility, learner engagement, content quality, or development efficiency.
  • Consult with business leaders and stakeholders to identify performance gaps, determine whether learning is an appropriate response, and recommend learning or non-learning solutions.
  • Advise SMEs and stakeholders on instructional design, adult learning, accessibility, content scope, delivery methods, and learning-development best practices.

Benefits

  • An annual base salary in the range of $70,000 to $90,000.
  • The salary range listed complies with the Ontario Employment Standards Act and reflects a potential base salary range for this role.
  • The actual salary offered will be determined within the range, and will depend on factors, such as the candidate’s unique qualifications, relevant experience, work location and expected contributions.
