About The Position

Morongo Unified School District Instructional Services is seeking a Special Circumstance Instructional Assistant (SCIA). The primary role of the SCIA is to provide support to a student with special needs, assisting in their supervision and instruction within either a special or general education classroom. This role involves helping to implement instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, communicating with school personnel, assisting students with assignments, and supporting students with unique medical, physical, and/or adaptive needs. This is an itinerant position, meaning the SCIA will follow assigned students from grade to grade, program to program, and site to site within the assigned end of the district. Assignments are generated by the SELPA Office, and the SCIA may be reassigned if the current student leaves the district or no longer requires support.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Assists in the preparation of instructional materials and learning aids for students with special needs.
  • Manages student behavior using positive reinforcement and other appropriate techniques to maintain a safe environment.
  • Attends to the physical and health needs of children, including performing first aid and specialized medical procedures for medically fragile children (e.g., seizures, suctioning, toileting, respiratory disorders).
  • Administers tests, homework, and make-up work to support teachers.
  • Attends meetings, professional development, and in-service presentations.
  • Observes and monitors physically impaired students for signs of distress and requests appropriate assistance.
  • Communicates with instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to assist in evaluating student progress.
  • Implements district-adopted curriculum under the supervision of the assigned teacher.
  • Assists students in learning self-care techniques (e.g., toilet training, bathing, feeding, personal cleanliness) to promote independence.
  • Maintains an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment.
  • Maintains instructional materials and manual/electronic files/records.
  • Monitors students in various school environments (e.g., classroom, restroom, playground, library, hallways, cafeteria) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) under the supervision of the assigned teacher.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
