About The Position

The Instructional Assistant - Special Education works under the direction of a teacher to support the learning and development of special needs students. This role involves assisting with instruction, adapting activities, monitoring student progress, implementing behavior plans, and providing clerical support to the teacher. The goal is to help special education students succeed in both specialized and mainstream classroom settings.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience is required.
  • Pre-employment Proficiency Test (AA or 48 college level semester units may be required).
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • TB Clearance.
  • Skills in adhering to safety practices.
  • Skills in operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications.
  • Skills in preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Knowledge of instructional procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of age-appropriate student activities.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of stages of child development/behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Adapting classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials for special education students to ensure participation.
  • Assisting the teacher with instructing special education students in various subjects and skills (e.g., math, science, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills).
  • Conferring with teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Implementing academic instruction for individuals or small groups as directed by the teacher and outlined in IEPs.
  • Implementing behavioral plans designed by the IEP team to meet student needs and provide a consistent environment.
  • Maintaining instructional materials and student files/records, including adapting materials and ensuring availability of resources.
  • Monitoring special education students in various settings (classroom, field trips, lunch, playground) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performing record-keeping (daily data on instruction and behavior) and clerical functions (e.g., grading papers, copying, inputting grades).
  • Responding to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
  • Attending meetings and in-service presentations for information exchange.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning.
