About The Position

The Special Circumstance Instructional Assistant (SCIA) provides support to students with special needs, assisting in their supervision and instruction within special or general education classrooms. This role involves implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, communicating with school personnel, and supporting students with unique medical, physical, and/or adaptive needs. The position is itinerant, meaning the SCIA follows assigned students from grade to grade, program to program, and site to site within a designated end of the district. Assignments are managed by the SELPA Office, and if an assigned student leaves the district or no longer requires support, the SCIA will be assigned a new student from their designated area.

  • Job related experience is required.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Pre-employment Proficiency Test (AA or 48 college level semester units may be required).
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • TB Clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
  • Assists in the preparation of instructional materials and learning aids for students with special needs.
  • Manages student behavior using positive reinforcement and appropriate techniques to maintain a safe environment.
  • Attends to the physical and health needs of children, including performing first aid and specialized medical procedures for medically fragile children (e.g., seizures, suctioning, toileting/diapering, respiratory disorders).
  • Administers tests, homework, and make-up work to support teachers.
  • Attends meetings, professional development, and in-service presentations.
  • Observes and monitors physically impaired students for signs of distress and requests appropriate assistance.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents to assist in evaluating student progress.
  • Implements, under teacher supervision, planned district-adopted curriculum to present and reinforce learning concepts.
  • Assists students in learning self-care techniques (toilet training, bathing, feeding, personal cleanliness) to promote independence.
  • Maintains an orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment.
  • Maintains instructional materials and records (manual and electronic) for availability and compliance.
  • Monitors students in various school environments (classroom, restroom, playground, etc.) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides instruction to students in individual and group activities (academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) under teacher supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
