The Institutional Risk Manager oversees and facilitates Appalachian’s Institutional Risk Management Program. The role leads the university’s annual institutional risk assessment, synthesizes findings into the annual Top Risk Report for university leadership and governance bodies, and prepares follow-up reports and dashboards tracking mitigation strategies and action plans. The position designs and continually refines a practical, scalable institution-wide risk management framework; facilitates Risk Review Board discussions and decisions; and recommends policy or procedural improvements to address key exposures. It advises institutional leadership on financial, operational, regulatory and compliance, reputational, and safety risks, while monitoring industry trends, regulatory developments, and higher-education risk events. The Institutional Risk Manager also supports campus partners’ risk management initiatives, maintains knowledge of institutional insurance operations to provide backup administrative support, and promotes a risk-aware campus culture through guidance, training materials, presentations, and brief risk updates. The role partners with university risk holders and the Office of Compliance and Ethics.
